A svéd Pain igazából egy ember főműve, mint azt gondolom, már sokan tudják, Peter Tägtgren áll a háttérben. A zenekar 1996-ban alakult meg, bár igazából egyedül Peter (ének, gitár, programok, egyebek) az egyetlen állandó tag, a többiek csak koncerteken vagy a stúdiómunkálatok folyamán veszik ki részüket a zenélésből, a mostani élő felállás a következő személyekből áll: David Wallin (dob), Johan Husgavfel (basszusgitár), Michael Bohlin (gitár). A bandának elég sok anyaga jelent meg az elmúlt években (1997 „Pain”, 2000 „Rebirth”, 2002 „Nothing Remains The Same”, 2005 „Dancing With The Dead”, 2007 „Psalms Of Extinction”), sokat játszottak és meglepően sok klip is készült. Magukat az industrial metal kategóriába sorolták, erőteljes hangulatokkal kísérletezve, mert ez nem pusztán egy industrial banda, annál talán többet tartalmaz – és mégsem.
Az első szám az I’m Going In egy erőteljes, dallamos tétel, a szerkezete nagyjából ugyanarra a vonalra épül fel, érdekes szintialap, a dob monoton, enyhén gépies hangzása, a gitárok karcos feelingje mind az industrial metal stílusjegyeit hordozzák, az ének főképp a hörgés és a dallamosság között helyezkedik el valahol. Túl sok újat nem produkálnak ebben a számban a srácok, persze ettől függetlenül egy Rammstein-fannak tuti bejön a dolog. A Monkey Business death metallal megvariált témái már kissé elhajlanak az átlag industrial zenéktől, sőt, olyan energiatöltetet robbantanak már a bevezetőben, ami nagyon feszessé teszi a dalt, attól függetlenül, hogy seperc alatt átmennek egy dallamos részbe, amely azután végig megtalálható a számban felépítésképp. Másabb ez a track, mint az előző, finomabb játék, finomabb hangok csendülnek itt fel, persze azért nem kell rosszra gondolni, itt is megmarad a dinamika.
A Follow Me inkább egyfajta goth rock beoltva industrial hangokkal, mintsem súlyos betétekkel teli zajzene. Talán a ’90-es évek végi bandák ugranak erről be nekem leginkább, könnyed témák, szintivel megpakolt alapok, a gitárok épp csak áttörnek a hangorkánon, amin Anette Olzon vokalista hangja sokat dob. Tipikus dobalapok, laza szerkezet, domináns effektek teszik kellemessé, könnyen befogadhatóvá, élvezhetővé ezt a nótát. A Have A Drink On Me ismét kellemes csalódás, az ipari hangzásnak kevésbé van itt szerepe, csakúgy, mint az előző számban. Bluesba hajló felhangokkal kezdődik a szám, az ének pedig egy másik oldalát mutatja meg nekünk. Érdekes rockzenei borulás fut végig a számon, mintha a Mötley Crüe lehangolta volna a hangszereit, és most valami mással kísérleteznének, nem csodálkozom a szám címén így.
A Don’t Care egy durva, súlyos szám, a riffek csak úgy sütnek, az alapok kőkeményen szólnak, az ének és az egész zene beteg, úgy, ahogy van. Feszes tempót diktálnak végig, ami egy-két helyen meg van törve egy pillanatnyi leállással. Ez is az alap industrial feeling tükrét tartja elénk, de nagyon oda van téve minden, épp ezért sokkalta erősebb. Beteges világa, úgy hiszem, mindenkit magával sodor majd. A Reach Out (And Regret) valahol Marilyn Manson világára és az azzal hasonszőrű bandákra emlékeztet, bár sok dallam tör fel a kemény hangok mellett belőle, mégis a jól tálalt szám fő riffjei az említett zenekarok vonalán mozog. Egyszerű dobtéma, a gitárok játéka feszes és simogató egyszerre, minden a helyén.
A Generation X ismét más világot tár fel. Fájdalmas hangokkal kezdődik, ami azután (ismét a Rammsteint kell szóba hoznom,) áttér egy rideg valóságot képviselő eklektikus zenei élménybe. Itt nincs mese, itt csak a való világ néz a szemedbe, a problémák, a kudarcok mély örvényt képző gondolata, érzete. Érdekes egy ilyen steril szemszöget megfogni, éreztetni pedig nem könnyű, de a Pain legénységének sikerült. A No One Knows súlyos alapokkal indul útjára, néhol olyan, mint egy noise banda korai kísérlete. A dallamos, de ugyanakkor melankolikus refrén mindezt felhígítja egy pillanat erejéig, hogy azután visszataszítson oda, ahonnan épp sikerült kivergődnöd. Alap témák mennek végig a szerkezeten, semmi különösebb rafináltság nincs benne, mégis szép, és egyszerűsége teszi azzá.
A Live Fast – Die Young rendesen be van oltva a new wave és a goth rock keveredésével, persze a refrén itt sokkal keményebben szól annál, hogy ennek a két stílusnak ilyen egyszerűen le lehetne fektetni ezt a számot. Sokkal szélesebb skálán mozog, több hatást hordoz, finomabb játékkal dolgozik, és így az összhatás is más. A heavy metalszerű szólórész az effektek vizualitása felé pakolva nagyon hatásos. Élj gyorsan, halj meg fiatalon. A Not Your Kind egy erőteljes résszel indít, ami hirtelen visszaesik egy más hangulatba, hogy azután feltámadva tüskéket szurkáljon a lélek fájdalmas pontjaiba, és élvezze fájdalmas sikolyaid. Kegyetlen hangulat, borult riffek, alapok, megvadítva az ének kifejezéstelen hangjaival. Ez a track is rendesen össze lett pakolva, hordoz magában egyfajta erőt, amely szétfeszíti a határokat.
Az utolsó szám a Feed Us címet viseli. Lazább, de kőkemény tempó megy itt is, az ének visszatért a hideg hangok használatához, egyedül Anette Olzen hangja teszi finomabbá a hangulatot a maga helyén. A zongorabetét teljesen olyan, mintha valami szimfonikus műben hallgatná az ember, az utána következő vastag gitártémák és a pontos alapok összeforrottságához kétség sem férhet. Minden jól szól ebben a dalban is. A limitált példányszámú dupla CD-s verzión még öt szám szerepel, kettő közülük feldolgozás (Depeche Mode- Behind The Wheel, Electric Light Orchestra- Here Is The News), valamint három saját szám remixe (Follow Me, Clouds Of Ecstasy, No One Knows). A lemezt csak ajánlani tudom azoknak, akik szeretnek belekóstolni új dolgokba, habár ez a stílus már nem mai gyerek, mégis a Pain csapata most letett valamit újra az asztalra.

In fact the Svedish Pain is one man’s main act, I reckon you know that Peter Tägtgren is behind this project. The band has formed in 1996 but Peter (vocals, guitars, programming, etc.) is the only permanent member, the others are play on concerts and at the studio, the present live formation is containing: David Wallin (drums), Johan Husgavfel (bass), Michael Bohlin (guitars). The band has got a lot of releases in the past few years (1997 „Pain”, 2000 „Rebirth”, 2002 „Nothing Remains the Same”, 2005 „Dancing with the Dead”, 2007 „Psalms of Extinction”), they’ve played on a lot gigs and surprisingly they had a lot of music videos. They labeled themselves as an industrial metal band which do experiments with mood-changes, ’cause this is not just a simple industrial, it may be more than that – but it’s not.
The first song In Going In is a harder, melodic one, it’s structure is based on one theme, interesting synth bases, the drum is monotone, somewhat machine-like, the guitars’ scratching sound bears the tone of industrial metal and vocals are somewhere between growling and melodic singing. They are not producing anything new in this song, but irrespectively of this fans of Rammstein will love it. Monkey Business’ themes varieted with death metal are differing from industrial metal, moreover they blow a great powerload in the intro that makes the whole song so tight in spite of that they got into a melodic theme in no time which after this moment is there in the whole song. This track is differ from the previous since the musicians do a more delicate play, there are finer sounds, of course you don’t have to think evil because the dynamics are still there.
Follow Me is much like a goth rock song integrated with industrial sound, it is far from a heavy inlayed noise music. Maybe some late ’90-s groups pops in my mind with fluent themes, synth packed bases, the guitars are only just breaking through the sound hurricane which is much supported by Anette Olzon’s voice. Typical drum beats, loose structure, dominating effects makes this song easier do digest, more enjoayable. Have a Dribk on Me is a comfortable delusion again. The industrial sound ain’t got that big part of the cake in this one, just like in the previous song. It starts with a bluesish overtone and the vocals shows us an other side of them. An interesting rock musical dementation can be heard in the song, it’s like Mötley Crüe drop tune their instruments and try to do something else… I don’t wonder of the name of the song after this.
Don’t Care is a raw and heavy song, the riffs are burning, the bases are hard as stone, the vocals and the whole song is sick as it is. They dictate a tight tempo all along which is some times broken for a moment with offsets. It shows us industrial metal’s mirror once again, but they’ve put real big effort in it so it is much stronger. n my opinion it’s sick world will drift everyone with itself. Reach Out (and Regret) reminds of Marilyn Manson’s music and the bands of that ilk. There are a lot of melodies besides the firm sounds in it but the main riffs of this fine served song are reminds me of the before-mentioned bands. Simple drum theme, the guitars are thight and gentle at the same time, everything is in it’s place.
Generation X opens a new world once again. I starts with painful voices, then it (I have to mention rammstein) goes into a musical experiment that stands for the coldness of reality. This is not just a tale, there is only the real World that looks into you eyes, the problems’ and the defeats’ swirl-creating thought and feel. It is interesting to grasp such a steril point of view, and it is much harder make the listener feel it, but Pain was succesful in this task. No One Knows starts with heavy basics, sometimes it is like a noise groups early experiment. The melodic, but at the same time melancholic refrain dilutes it for a second but then it throws us back where we cam from. There are basic themes running over it’s structure, nothing special is in it, it’s just simply beautiful because it’s simplicity. Live Fast – Die Young is filled with the mix of new wave and goth rock, of course the chorus is much harder than to place the song to any of the mentioned genres. And it moves on a much wider range, holds more influences, works with a finer playing and because of these facts the effect of the whole is somewhat else too. The heavy metal solo has been put over the effects and this is a realy impressing idea.
Live fast, die young. Not Your Kind begins with a powerful part which then falls back to another mood, but then again when it rises it stabs torns into the weak points of your soul and it enjoys your painful scream. Merciless mood, weird riffs, bases, wildened with the expressionless vocals’ sounds. This track has been put tohether correctly too, it carries in it power that strains the boundaries.
The last song is called Feed Us. A bit sloppier but still stone hard tempo runs here too, the vocals are back to the frigid style, only Anette Olzen’s voice makes it a bit mellow when she sings. The piano inlay is totally like it is from a symphonic work, and the guitar themes after it are perfectly welded together. Everything sounds nice in this song too. On the limited dual-disc there are five more songs, two of them are covers (Depeche Mode – Behind the Wheel, Electric Light Orchestra – Here is the News), and three of theme are remixes of their own songs (Follow me, Clouds of Ecstasy, No One Knows). I can only advise this song to anyone who likes to try new things, although this style is well on in years, but Pain has put something on the desk once again.
