Az 1990-es évek végén induló vezető európai metalzenekarok egy része igen erőteljes változáson ment át, gondoljunk csak a Sonata Arctica vagy az Edguy legutóbbi lemezeire. A német Primal Fear is egy gothosabb, szellősebb zenei irányba mozdult el a Sevel Seals és a New Religion lemezekkel. Az új 16.6 (Before The Devil Knows You”re Dead) névre keresztelt lemez azonban visszatérés a Jaws Of Death, Nuclear Fire lemezek világához, mégis megtartott valamennyit az újabb lemezek világából is.
Már az intro alatt is sejteni lehet, hogy itt most nem lesz sok finomkodás, és valóban: a Riding The Eagle valószínűleg azonnali kedvence lesz a PF rajongóknak és szinte biztosan a koncertek szerves részét fogja képezni. Dallamos, mégis kemény, ahogy azt az ember egy power metal himnusztól elvárja. Szerencsére nem ez az egyetlen ilyen szám a hosszúnak mondható (70 perces) albumról, a Smith & Wesson és az Under The Radar is hasonló potenciállal rendelkezik, de a többi szám sem marad el mögöttük minőségben.
Mint már említettem a csapat az újabb lemezeket nem tagadta meg, ez főleg effektek használatában, helyenként szokatlan énektémákban jelentkezik, elsősorban a lemez közepén a Torn, Soar és Black Rain számokban. De a zenei palettát nem ez teszi szélessé: érzelmes líráktól kezdve a klasszikus középtempós döngöléseken át a szélvészgyors, kétlábdobos speedelések egyaránt megtalálhatóak a lemezen.
A zenészekről is muszáj szót ejtenem, hiszen nem akárkik játszanak a zenekarban. Ralf Scheepers, a metal világ egyik legkiválóbb énekese itt sem tagadja meg magát, érzelmes témáit és a magas sikolyait is egyforma intenzitással hozza. Mat Sinner basszusgitáros kicsit háttérbe szorul, de ha valaki odafigyel, akkor hallhatja kiváló játékát. Henny Wolter mellé az előző lemezen vendégként szereplő Magnus Karlsson került gitáros posztra és már most megmutatta, hogy mikre képes, fantasztikus riffeket és szólókat vezet elő ez a svéd srác. A dobos Randy Black ismét jó, még ha nem is agyonbonyolított dobtémákat hoz, de hát aki évekig az Annihilatort erősítette az nem okozhat csalódást.
Ez a lemez szinte tökéletes lenyomata a Primal Fear eddigi munkásságának, minden megtalálható rajta, amiért a bandát szeretni lehet. Valószínűleg a fanyalgóknak is jobban tetszik majd, mint a New Religion. Nekem a boldogsághoz már csak egy hazai Primal Fear koncert kellene.

Some of the major european bands who started in the late 90s went through radical changes ragarding their style, think just about the latest album of Sonata Arctica and Edguy for example. The german power metal flagship Primal Fear also has raised some eyebrows with Seven Seals and New Religion, they turned to a lighter, more gothlike style with those records. Although their new album which is called 16.6 (Before The Devil Knows You”re Dead) is a back-to-the-roots masterpiece it contains some elements of the previously mentioned albums.
During the intro it was crystal clear for me that this time won”t be any messing around and I was right: Riding The Eagle is an instant classic and I”m sure that this song will be a major part of Primal Fear sets for a long time. Melodic, yet heavy, just what you expect from a power metal hymn. Fortunately this isn”t the only song with hit potencial on the quite long (70 minutes playing time!) album, Smith & Wesson and Under The Radar is equally strong, but I can say the overall quality of the songs is very high.
I”ve mentioned earlier that the band didn”t abandon the musical world of the latest albums entirely. You can clearly hear it in the use of some weird effect and strange melodies, mainly in the middle of the album in songs like Black rain, Soar, Torn. But this isn”t the only thing that broadens the musical horizont: you can find equally very good tracks from the catchy slow songs through classic mid paced metal pieces to lightning fast double bass drum speedings.
I must say something about the musicians, because it”s not a band of nobodies. Ralf Scheepers is one of the best singers in the metal genre. From the emotional themes to the ultra high screams he is the master of his voice. Mat Sinner stays in the background buti f you listen carefully you can hear his great play. Magnus Karlsson who appered on New Religion as a guest musician is now the partner of Henny Wolter ont he six string and he made some amazing stuff ont he album. The drummer Randy Black plays again good but not overly compley themes, but you can”t be disappointed in someone who was the drummer of Annihilator for years.
This album is an almost perfect picture of what Primal Fear done in the last decade, you can find everything here what you can love in the band. I think even those who weren”t satisfied with New Religion will find this album worthy for future listening. For my happiness I only need a Primal Fear gig in Hungary.
