RAVEN név alatt nem egy zenekar tevékenykedik/tevékenykedett, a szóban forgó, ködös misztikumba burkolózó alakulat a norvég verzió. Néhányan talán tudják, hogy a zenekar a FORGOTTEN WOODS-os Rune Vedaa mellék-projectje volt, a többi zenésztárásról azonban nem áll információ rendelkezésre. Feltehetően ezeket a felvételeket anno nem is igazán publikus célra csinálták, de aztán valahogy mégiscsak kiszivárogtak. Egyébként a zenekar RAVN (a raven szó norvég megfelelője) néven indult, és 2 darab próbatermi körülmények között rögzített demót tudhat magáénak. RAVEN név alatt pedig a No Colours kiadó által cenzúrázott címmel (F.M) megjelent mini CD (ami manapság elég nagy ritkaságnak számít eredetiben), illetve a későbbiekben bakelit formátumú The Murder Sessions anyag szaporítja diszkográfiájukat. Ez utóbbi CD-s újrakiadása jelen ismertető tárgya.
Azt azért, amit a borító állít, kétségbe vonnám, hogy ezeknek a ’90-es években készült felvételeknek ez lenne az első digitális formátumú megjelenése, hiszen a lemez utolsó négy dala nem más, mint az F.M. mini CD anyaga, azzal a különbséggel, hogy ezeknél a verzióknál hosszabb a dalok előtt található zaj, de ez mindössze pár másodperc editálási különbséget jelent. A többi 6 nóta származásáról nincs semmi információ (egyébként valójában egyikről sem, 10 cím nélküli dalról beszélünk), de nem kizárt, hogy valamelyik, még RAVN néven kiadott anyagról származó felvétel is helyet kapott itt, de ezt megerősíteni nem tudom. Nem is ez a lényeg, hanem az, hogy aki a másodgenerációs norvég Black Metal feltétlen híve, és szereti a csemegéket, a zajos, moonbloodi mocskos hangzással ellátott, extrém rikácsoló énekkel kísért demo felvételeket, amelyben ott lobog az a bizonyos Fekete Láng, az valószínűleg örömmel fogadja ezt a gyűjteményes kiadványt. Nyers, barbár, csattogós szerzemények ezek, ahol nem is igazán a dalokon van a hangsúly, hanem magán a (zenei) koncepción, a pusztításon. Érdekes lett volna egyébként hallani a nótákat mondjuk stúdió felvétel formájában is, de gyanítom, a hangzás nem lett volna nagyon sokkal tisztább, bár ki tudja, egyáltalán lett -e volna ennek értelme… A minimalista, információ szegény csomagolás egyébként jól illik a zene puritánságához.
Annak nem ajánlanám a lemezt, akinek a Black Metalt mondjuk az utolsó EMPEROR album jelenti. Régi DARTHRONE, ISVIND anyagok (és ezen bandák demóinak) kedvelői viszont nyugodtan beruházhatnak a lemezbe, és egy historikus jellegű kiadvánnyal gazdagíthatják gyűjteményüket.

ENGLISH VERSION:
There are/were bands acting under the moniker, RAVEN, this one in question, clad in foggy mysticism, is the Norwegian. Some of you might know that this was the side-project of FORGOTTEN WOODS’ Rune Vedaa, of the other musicians, however, we do not have any information. Presumably, these recordings weren’t meant for the public back then, but somehow they leaked. Anyway, the band started under the name RAVN (English word for raven), and they released to rehearsal demos. As RAVEN, they put out a mini CD with a censored title (F.M) on No colours (this release is quite a rarity these days), as well as a vinyl stuff The Murder Sessions. This material reviewed right here is the CD version of this latter.
I’d argue with the cover saying that this would be the first digital format of these recordings recorded in the early ’90s since the last four songs are actually from the F.M. mini CD. The only difference is that these versions have a bit longer noise before the actual tracks, but this means only a couple of seconds. The origin of the other six tracks are unknown (in fact, we got no info on the tracks at all, there are 10 untitled songs on the record), but it’s possible that some of these come from one of the RAVN demos. However, I cannot confirm that. But the point is that those into the second generation of Norwegian Black Metal and rare stuffs, blessed with MOONBLOOD-like dirty production and extreme, screeching vocals in which there is that certain Black Flame will surely welcome this in his/her collection. These are unpolished, barbaric, clashing compositions where the emphasis is rather on the (musical) concept and destruction than on the tracks themselves. It would be interesting to hear these songs recorded in a studio but I suspect the sound would not be too much different but who knows if that would have made any sense at all… The minimalist, poor-in-information cover fits the simplicity of the music well anyway.
I wouldn’t recommend this to those to whom the last EMPEROR record means Black Metal. Those into old DARKTHRONE, ISVIND stuffs (and their demos) can easily invest into it, and can enrich their collection with this historical material.
