Az idén húsz éves német banda a közelmúltban alakult újjá, jelenleg a csapatban Alex Wenn (dob), André Hort (basszusgitár), Ferdy Doernberg (ének, szintetizátor, gitár) és Mike Mandel (gitár) játszik. A sokadik lemezen túl lévő banda új anyagát volt szerencsém kivesézni egy kicsit.
A nyitó Temple Of Evil, egy lázas tempójú heavy metal nóta, finom, de dinamikus játékkal, határozott témavilággal. A gitárriffek remekül feszülnek a ritmushangszerek által hozott alapra, a szintetizátor kellemes aláfestést biztosít. Az ének változatos játéka üdítően hangzik, mint a következő dalban, a Home Is Where The Pain Is címűben, ami a hard rock határait súrolja, kellemes vonalvezetése, hangzása révén – a kemény ütemek egymás után jobbnál jobb témák szólalnak meg. A kidolgozott szóló keményen megdörren, úgy hiszem, hogy a zenekar rajongói nem fognak csalódni benne. A Reborn To Wait már egy karcosabb dal, sokkal tempósabb, sőt, az ének is „kegyetlenebb”. A verze és a refrén erőteljes megszólalása, a hangszeresek játéka – figyelembe véve az akusztikus betétet is – hatalmas élvezetet nyújt. A The Roll Of The Dice sötét hangulattal indít, kitartott gitártémákkal, amire hanyag eleganciával üt különböző variációkat a dobos. Egy szaggatós, négynegyedes téma után bejön egy főképp énekre épülő kiállás (aminek stílusával jómagam nem vagyok elégedett), majd erre egy pusztító témavilág épül fel.
A When The Circus Is Coming To Town füstös hangulata, a hard rock-os ének, a gitárriffek és a szinti összjátéka itt erőteljesebb a kezdésnél, de természetesen az utána jövő metalorientáltabb témák is karakteresek, pontosak és ütősek. Egy középtempós nóta ez, tele a stílus gyökereit felvillantó alapokkal. A Sierra Madre indítása a vadnyugatot idézi a pillanat erejéig, persze a tornyosuló szintitéma és akusztikus gitár összjátéka sem marad el ettől. A dob száll be először a ritmushangszerek közül, majd jön a torzított gitár – és máris újra a heavy metal stílusjegyei dübörögnek a hangfalakból. Kissé szimfonikus szerkezetet kapott a dal, és így változatos felépítéssel kápráztat el. A címadó A New Beginning borús dallamai végigsöprik a föld felszínét – erős gitártémák súlyos hangzással kombinálva dörrennek meg, és nagyjából ez a hangulat érezhető végig, dallamos és egységes énekkel.
A Warpaint ismét egy nyersebb hangzású, kemény énekkel ellátott vonal mentén épül fel. A dallamok természetesen itt sem hiányoznak, a jól felépített alapokra pedig egy még erőteljesebb, színesebb szóló került. A Black Leather tempós szerkezete finom rezdülésekkel varázsol egy érdekes hangulatot – persze abszolút a ’80-as évek stílusjegyeinek gazdagságát kiaknázva -, a heavy metal klasszikus alapjait itt ugyanúgy felfedezhetjük, mint a szólósémákat.
A We’ve Got A File On You egy karcos, gyors témákkal teli, bulizós dal (mondhatnám igazi extrém sörmetal :)), abszolút minimális alapokkal, de ez bőven elég ehhez a számhoz. A zongorakísérettel ellátott kiállás is jól sikerült, maximális élvezetet nyújt egy jó bulin. A Deadline harcos hangokkal és egy kis szólózással vág neki a szögelős dobtémákra és basszusgitárra írt szerkezetnek. A végig egyszerű riffek húzósak, megmozdítják az ember fejét – a dinamikus egység nagyszerű bemutatása mindez, minimál alapokra építkezve – néha így születnek a legjobb dalok. A We All Need Something To Hold On To In This Life egy nyugodtabb, balladaszerű darab, bár néhol már kissé túl gyenge is. Mindenesetre távolinak tűnik az eddigi daloktól, bár nem nagyon bontja meg a sort hangzásában. A Song For Milmer zárja a lemezt tizenharmadikként. Zongorafutam bontódik a legelején, klasszikus zenei jegyekkel, ami azután néhol átcsap egy kis improvizatív világba. Kellemes, de enyhén szomorú ének kíséri a témákat – finom lehelet egy őszi délutánon. Az értés és a meg-nem-értés dala ez egyszerre és különállóként egyaránt. A búcsúdal harmóniái könnyedek és nehezek – a végén pedig a szinti mély kísérete fölött a gitár hangjai csendülnek az alkonyatba.
Összességében korrekt lemezt adott ki a banda, a stílus szerelmeseinek mindenképp ajánlott!

ENGLISH VERSION:
This German band is celebrating their 20th birthday this year. They’ve just reunited, the current lineup is: Alex Wenn (drums), André Hort (bass), Ferdy Doernberg (vocals, keyboard, guitar) and Mike Mandel (guitar). They had several albums before this new stuff, which I’m going to discover now.
The opening „Temple Of Evil” is a hot tempo heavy metal song with smooth, but dynamic play, and a compact musical atmosphere. The guitar riffs are well built upon the base of the rhythm instruments, and the keyboard in the background is also nice. The various vocals makes the song vivid, just like int he next song, titled „Home Is Where The Pain Is”, which is close to hard rock in sounding, and the themes are softer, too, which are beat by beat better. The well constructed solo is also a direct hit, I think the fans won’t be disappointed in it. „Reborn To Wait” is a bit more harsh, the song has a faster tempo, and the vocals are also more killing. The powerful verse and the chorus, along with the play of the instruments – including the acoustic part sas well – are highly enjoyable. „The Roll Of The Dice” opens with a dark atmosphere and long guitar themes, peppered by harmonic drum play variations. After a staccato 4/4 theme, there’s a protrusion built upon the vocals (but I’m not satisfied with its style), thus a killing atmosphere evolves.
The smoky atmosphere, the hard rock-like vocals, the harmony of the guitar riffs and the keyboard are heavier at „When The Circus Is Coming To Town” than at the beginning, but of course the following more metal oriented themes are also characteristic, accurate, and they really hit. It’s a mid tempo song, with a base which reflects to the roots of this genre. „Sierra Madre” starts with a wild west atmosphere, and the harmony unfolding keyboard theme and the acoustic guitar also follow that. As for the rhythm instruments, first the drums appear, but then we can notice the distorted guitar – and now it’s heavy metal again. The construction of the song is a bit symphonic, but anyway, it crushes us with its variousity. The gloomy melodies of „New Beginning” sweep everything away from the earth’s surface. The powerful guitar themes rock with their deep sounding, and we can feel this atmosphere from start to end, with melodic and compact vocals.
The sounding of „Warpaint” is again a raw sounding song with heavy vocals. The melodies of course can’t be missed there, either; and upon the well constructed base, a very powerful and complex solo emerges. „Black Leather” has a good tempo, and with its smooth vibration, it sets an interesting atmosphere, capitalizing on the usage of the various features of the ’80s. It’s classic heavy metal, and we can notice the schematic solos, too.
„We’ve Got A File On You” is a scratchy song with fast themes. A party song (real extreme „beer metal”), with minimal bases, but it’s enough for this song. The protrusion with the piano lead is also good, it can provide maximal enjoyment on a good party. „Deadline” starts with war themes and some solos. They’re followed by the frame of hammering drum themes and bass guitar. The riffs are simple but catchy, they hit – there’s a dynamic entity there built upon minimal bases – sometimes it’s the best way to construct a song. „We All Need Something To Hold On To In This Life” is a balladistic, relieving song, sometimes it’s a bit too soapy. It’s way different from the other songs, but it doesn’t change the general sounding of the album. „Song For Milmer” closes the album, it’s Track 13. A piano section unfolds at the beginning, with classic musical features; sometimes with improvisative sections. The vocals are pleasant and a bit gloomy: a little sigh on a fall afternoon. The song is maybe about understanding and non-understanding. The harmonies of the closing song are soft and heavy at the same time, and in the end, the deep melodies of the keyboard whispers into the twilight with the sound of guitar.
In general, it’s a fair album, if you like this genre, I can recommend it to you!
