Az ember szinte hajlamos volt azt gondolni, nem is lesz nagylemez már a finn bandától. Hiszen az előző, Carelian Satanist Madness album (amely több mint kitűnőre sikerült) 2005-ben jelent meg. Azóta persze sok kiadvány volt, de a nagylemezre egészen 2010 késő nyaráig kellett várni.
A lemez előtt nem sokkal egyébként már hallható volt az anyag nagy része, a 200 példányban, pro CD-r formátumban kiadott We are the Worms That Crawl on the Broken Wings of an Angel válogatás-jellegű kiadványon. Azon felvételek azonban nem a végső keverést rejtették, noha azt előre jelezték, hogy nem egy kommerszebb irányba forduló SATANIC WARMASTER-rel kell számolnunk.
A sötét, torz, hangokból építkező Intro indítja éjjeli útjára a farkasembert, akár a lemez borítóképe. Aztán érkezik az első igazi track, a Satan’s Werewolf, ami hangzásával az érzékenyebb lelkületűeket illetve vájt fülűeket kapásból elriasztja. Igazán rohadt, durva, 4-sávon rögzített analóg hangzásról van szó, ami egy ódon élt ad az egész albumnak, de szerintem kimondottan jól el lett találva. Maga a dal pedig egy lendületes, jól megírt igazi északi jellegű BM szerzemény, visító énekkel, egyszerű, de hatásos középtempósabb riffekkel itt-ott, illetve hangulatos billentyűmotívummal a gyors, vágtázó részeknél. A Vampires a W.A.T.W.T.C.O.T.B.W.O.A.A. verzióhoz képest kapott némi, régi horror filmeket idéző effektezést (olyan, mint egy ódon kastélyban szerte-szét szaladgáló patkányok neszezése) a kezdő taktusoknál. A hagyományosabb dalszerkezet nagyon jól érvényesül, ahogy a refrén felé emelkedik a dal a hangulata. A Warmaster Returns is nagyon jó témákkal operál, a gyors részeknél hallható dallam pedig a lemez egyik csúcspontja számomra. Dicsőséges, de ugyanakkor durva is a hangzás miatt. A következő One Shining Star is hasonló minőségű-szintet hoz, talán leheletnyi folkos feelinget hordozva a fő riffjében. Nagyon jó sodró, északi dallamok hallhatók egyébként ebben a dalban is. A vontatott kezdésű, morbid Bestial Darkness orgona-jellegű aláfestéssel nyit (a régi GRAVELAND világát felidézendő), majd gyorsabb, húst szaggató riffekkel halad tovább. Az utolsó előtti Rotting Raven’s Blood egy epikusabb darab, melankolikus dallamvilággal, és egyes témák a norvég HADES Alone Walkyng dalát juttatják eszembe. És ezt nem rossz értelemben mondom. A 40 perces albumot aztán a nyugodtabb hangvételű Utug-Hul zárja, amelynek szövegét a BLACK FUNERAL-os Michael Ford szerezte. A dal szintetizátorra és énekre épül, és egy ősi imára emlékeztet leginkább. Kitűnő lezárása az anyagnak.
Egy hamisítatlan északi Black Metal anyag a Nachzehrer, amit csak ajánlani tudok a műfajt értő és kedvelő embereknek.

One almost tended to think that there would be no full-length album from this Finnish band at all, since the previous record titled Carelian Satanist Madness (that turned out to be more than excellent) was put out in 2005. Since then, of course, a lot of stuff have been released but we had to wait until late summer 2010 to have the next full-length in our hands.
Anyway, a short time before the album there was a pro CD-r limited to 200 released under the title We are the Worms That Crawl on the Broken Wings of an Angel, a sort of compilation including most of the new material. Those recordings, however, were not the final mix even though they indicated that one should not expect a SATANIC WARMASTER heading for a more commercial direction.
The Intro, including dark, muffled sounds, starts off the werewolf on its night journey, as the cover of the record itself. Then comes the first real track, Satan’s Werewolf, that scares away all the light-hearted and sharp-eared right away with its production. We get a truly rotten, raw, 4-track analogue sound that gives an ancient edge to the whole album but in my opinion it turned out to be great. The track itself is a dynamic, well-written Northern Black Metal song with screeching vocals, simple but effective slower riffs here and there and moody synth motives in the fast parts. Vampires, compared to the W.A.T.W.T.C.O.T.B.W.O.A.A. version got some effects, reminding me of old horror movies (like rats clattering in an old castle) at the beginning. The traditional song structure is really good, when the mood of the track is getting higher towards the chorus part. Warmaster Returns also operates with very good themes, and the melodic motive in the faster part is one of my faves off the record. It’s triumphant but at the same time raw due to the sound. Next one, One Shining Star, also brings the same level, carrying a touch of folkish thing in the main riff. The morbid, Bestial Darkness opening with a slow theme has some colouring organ-like synth in it (like early GRAVELAND), then takes off with faster, flesh-ripping riffs. Rotting Raven’s Blood is amore epic tune with a bit of melancholic aura, and certain themes of it remind me of the track Alone Walkyng by Norwegian HADES. And I mean that in a positive sense. The 40-minute-long album is closed by the calmer Utug-Hul, the lyric of which was written by Michael Ford of BLCK FUNERAL. The song is based on synth and vocals, and reminds me of an ancient prayer for the most part. A most excellent closing of this material.
Nachzehrer is true, Northern Black Metal stuff that I can only recommend to experts and lovers of the genre.
