A még 1987-ben alakult angol zenekar – Ian Arkley (ének, gitár), Mark Broomhead (basszusgitár), Simon Bibby (gitár), Tank aka Andrew Thompson (dob) – idén jelentette meg sorban („Seventh Angel” és „The Rehearsal Demo” demo 1989, „Heed The Warning” demo és „The Torment” CD 1990, „White Metal Warriors – Last Ship Home” CD 1991, „Lament For The Weary” CD 1992, „Heed The Warning – live” best of /compilation CD 2005) nyolcadik kiadványát, ebbe hallgathattunk bele.

A nyitó Chaos Of Dreams karcos hangokkal oldja fel a csendet. A progresszív betétekkel is átszőtt zenei szerkezet különböző stílusjegyeket hordoz magában, olyan mintha némi doom-ot, és death metalt vegyítenének a fiúk a vegytiszta thrash metal hangulatával. Persze ettől szólal meg úgy, ahogyan. A tiszta énekes refrénrészek, és a hörgős énektémák itt ugyanúgy megtalálhatóak, úgy látszik, tudnak még a fiúk mit az asztalra letenni. A The Turning Tide folytatja a sort, egy finom gitárrésszel indítva. Sokat merítenek a fiúk a ’80-as évek zenei gyökereiből, mindezt azonban modern köntösbe öltöztetik, ami a hangzást illeti.

A Weep Not For Us pörgős témavilága kőkemény hangokkal durvul, az ének mély hangjai átölelik ezt a pusztító keveréket, amelynek fekete színei elöntenek mindent.

A The Raven Sky sem feltétlen a thrash metal hangzásvilágát képviseli, ahogy az album utóbbi egy-két száma sem.

ENGLISH VERSION:

This English band was formed back in 1987. The members are: Ian Arkley (vocals, guitar), Mark Broomhead (bass), Simon Bibby (guitar), Tank a.k.a. Andrew Thompson (drums), they has come out with their new, eighth release this year, after Seventh Angel, The Rehearsal Demo, 1989, Heed The Warning demo, The Torment CD, 1990, White Metal Warriors – Last Ship Home CD, 1991, Lament For The Weary CD 1992, Heed The Warning – live best of/compilation CD, 2005. I’m reviewing their new release.

The opening song, Chaos Of Dreams breaks the silence with scratchy voices. The musical frame also contains some progressive elements, thus it has a bit doom and death metal atmosphere next to the basic, pure thrash metal. But this doesn’t spoil the sounding. The clean vocal chorus sections and the growly vocal themes can also be found, these boys can still compose some great music for us. The Turning Tide follows the path, starting with a smooth guitar sections. The guys constructed their music mostly upon the trends of the 80s musical style, but they put this into a modern version, as for the sounding. The themes follow each other in a sweep round, the bases are well constructed, the well-established voices suit them finely; the vocals also remain various. The tempo is average, but there’s nothing bad about it – it sounds well this way, too. The heavy voices of Exordium seem to sink under the evil dark water surfaces, to erupt again again from there. The dynamics aren”t lost despite the slow tempo, the guitar riffs are well places, the section with the protrusion also improves the song. The accuracy of the rhythm instruments, the variousity of the vocals culminate there, making the music unique.

The whirling themes of Weep Not For Us have some brutally heavy voices at the beginning, the deep voices of the vocals embrace this killing world, flooding everything with this black atmosphere. This brutal atmosphere is strong, the accurate play of the instruments crushes us, grabs us. A well constructed song again. Abélard and Heloise starts with a goth church choir, floowed by a base introduction speech. Then comes a softer guitar theme with its smooth play. This mysterious track lasts quite long, but it doesn’t become boring. With a raging vocal theme, all other instruments enter the song, too. A monotonous, staccato range of beats follow this, it crushes us with its frightening atmosphere, which leans a bit to folk. In Ruins is another turning point. The intro was a good idea of it. From a progressive-like theme world they change to a slow beat section, where there are heavy vocals. These two parts are fluctuating there, they follow and follow each other. Between the melodies, the shifts are very good, the dynamics are flat from start to end. Lamentations enters with an enchanted image view – a shady, floating, cool atmosphere with melodic vocals. Then comes a more scratchy change, with a more harsh theme world and vocals. Above the field of the frame, the wind blows a dark cloud, everything gets strained, we can feel the arrival of the storm, its smell, in this sequence, but then, the sky starts to lighten, but the evil forces seemingly don’t want to retreat from there.

The Raven Sky also doesn’t really have a true thrash metal sounding, like the previous songs of the albums. There’s some extravagance in it, which is like the doom of the mid ’90s. But it”s not a simple copy of it. A very unique song, despite all prejudices, we can also find there the progressive effects. There are more melodic parts, but we can also notice heavier vocal sections as well, between the characteristicly strained, embracing or trashing themes. There are some very good effects, very good sections, we can feel that they were working hard to come out with a decent CD.
The closing song, Oswiecim builds the atmosphere of the frame with an acoustic sounding. The vocals are rather a heroic speech, it makes the gloomy atmosphere fade, rising it above the spheres. Between the smooth sounds, we can notice a constant rumbling then, the other sounds disappear with the time completely. Everything becomes cold and dark. Is there any sign of life? A sick and unexpectable change. I can strongly recommend this album to all music fans. Take a listening of it, this CD can’t be neglected.
