ENGLISH VERSION:
I approached this EP with a little worry, knowing that Sonic Syndicate changed vocalist: would they ever find a singer as good as Roland Johansson? Some of the old fans may cast stones at me, but I think they found an even better one with Nathan Biggs.
Otherwise we get what we expect after Sonic Syndicate’s previous two albums: tough metalcore riffing, catchy choruses, modern synth tunes, and the combo of harsh and clean vocals on the top of it. Those who didn’t like what they are doing will not like this EP either; and those who did will not be disappointed. This is full-blooded mainstream modern metal of the best quality, in my view.
The EP feature two songs, of which Burn this City is the real hit. It sticks into you ear after three listenings. Rebellion in Nightmareland is not that hit-like but is still a catchy song with cool riffs. Both songs are dynamic, although I wouldn’t straightforwardly call them fast. Yet I hope the album will be more varied pacewise. The third track is the radio edition of Burn this City, but it doesn’t doffer much from the original.
It is worth emphasizing that Nathan Biggs’s vocals are very varied in both songs. His vocal range is much wider than Roland’s, and even though it isn’t so effective at first, it’s very easy to come to like it. He uses much more curves, which lends some soft rock feeling to the whole thing; at the same time he is also good at core-y toughguy screaming. Some will surely complain that Sonic Syndicate was better with Roland; but that’s the fate of new vocalists. I’m very much looking forward to the new album; I’m pretty certain it won’t disappoint admirers of the band and the style.
