A négytagú német Suidakra már közel 20 éve a metal színtéren mozog folkos, kelta népzenére, mitológiára építő melodikus death metal muzsikájával. Magyarországon is kétszer játszottak már, 2003-ban és 2007-ben, de igazi nemzetközi ismertségre csak az utóbbi években kezdtek szert tenni, miután a Wacken Open Air fesztivál kiadója kiadta két lemezüket 2008-2009-ben, majd legutóbbi korongjukat, a Book of Dowth-t már az AFM Records jelentette meg 2011-ben. E kiadó segítségével jön ki legújabb lemezük is, az Eternal Defiance 2013 májusának végén. E lemezzel 2013 őszén a Heidenfest turnén is részt vesznek, de sajnos ez minket, magyarokat ismét nem érint (esetleg Bécsben lehet elcsípni az utazófesztivált szeptember 26-án).
A banda érdekessége, hogy bár még nevét is a zenekarvezető-zeneszerző Arkadius Antonikről kapta (Suidakra=Arkadius visszafelé), az utóbbi lemezek koncepcióját és szövegeit Kris Verwimp, belga grafikus művész dolgozta ki. Nincs ez másképp az új téma esetében sem, amely most egy velszi (vagy walesi, kinek hogy tetszik) mondakör, az úgynevezett „Macsen Wledig álma” köré épül. E kelta történet az utolsó, Britanniát is uraló nyugat-római császár, Magnus Maximus figuráján alapul, ő Macsen Wledig a történetben. A borítót is természetesen Verwimp mester alkotta meg, viszonylag minimalista, mégis látványos stílusban, sőt e koronghoz egy képregényt is rajzolt. 1999 óta egy rövid megszakítást leszámítva mindig ő rajzolja a banda bookleteit, emellett többek között pl. a Sear Bliss és a Thyrfing korai borítói vagy épp az Arkona és a Månegarm grafikái köthetők a nevéhez.
E lemezen azonban nem csak a grafikusművész, hanem a több korábbi lemezen közreműködő Tina Stabel énekesnő és Axel Römer dudás is minden eddiginél nagyobb szerepet kapott. A vendégszereplésen kívül ezúttal részt vettek a dalok megírásában is, így nem véletlen, hogy az eddigi lemezekhez képest több dalban szerepel női ének és skótduda. E népzenészek és vonós hangszerek bevonásának köszönhetően ez lett a Rajna-vidéki kelták eddigi legfolkosabb anyaga és érezhető az a törekvés is, hogy a korábbiaknál epikusabb, filmzenés atmoszférát igyekeztek teremteni neki (emelkedett billentyűtémák, rézfúvósok stb.). Az Eternal Defiance-t egyben végighallgatva önkéntelenül egy látványos történelmi film jelenetei peregnek le a szemünk előtt – aki nem rendelkezik ekkora képzelőerővel, annak a March Of Conquest klipje nyújthat kiindulási alapot. Az epikus intró mellett két (illetve a bónusz népdalfeldolgozással együtt három) akusztikus nóta lágyítja az egyébként elég zúzós lemezt. A többi tételben a középtempós részeket kemény zúzdák és akusztikus, szimfonikus körök váltják. Maradandóak az olyan számok, mint a fülbemászó népi refrénű klipdal, a menetelős Inner Sanctum, az epikus Beneath The Red Eagle (főleg a női énekes, melodikus részei), a Pair Dadeni a dudajátékával vagy a Defiant Dreams fogós riffjeivel és billentyűs/vonós témáival. Az anyag egyben és külön, dalonként is teljesen megállja a helyét, egyedül a dobtémák válnak kissé unalmassá háromnegyed óra alatt.
A Suidakra eddig is minőségi anyagokat készített, e lemezzel sem alkotott igazán újat, „csak” hozta a szokásos színvonalat. A népi és epikus elemek növelése jót tett a hangzásnak, megerősítette a banda zenei világát, ezzel pedig megalapozták, hogy elismertebbé és ismertebbé váljanak nemzetközi szinten. Ezek után ideje lenne végre ismét fellépniük Magyarországon, és remélem, hogy a vendégmuzsikusokat is hozzák magukkal!

The German quartet, Suidakra is active on the metal scene for already around 20 years with their folkish, Celtic folk music and mythology based melodic death metal music. They’ve played everywhere in Europe during their early history but they became better-known internationally only in the last couple of years, after the label of Wacken Open Air festival released their two albums in 2008-2009 and AFM Records released their latest longplayer, Book of Dowth in 2011. This label will release their upcoming album, Eternal Defiance at the end of May, 2013, too. With this album they’re going to participate on Heidenfest tour this autumn, but unfortunately most of the gigs will take place only in the German-speaking regions of Europe again.
It’s interesting that although the band even got its name from the bandleader-composer, Arkadius Antonik (Suidakra=Arkadius backwards), the concepts and lyrics of their latest albums were made by Kris Verwimp, the Belgian graphic artist. The situation is same with the new topic, which is based on a Welsh legend, the so-called “dream of Macsen Wledig”. This Celtic story is rooted in the character of the last Western Roman emperor, who also ruled Britain, Magnus Maximus – he’s Macsen Wledig in the story. Of course the graphic artwork was also created by master Verwimp in a rather minimalist but also very aesthetic style, and he even drew a comic for this album. From 1999 he created almost all of the band’s booklets and besides those, the early covers of Sear Bliss, Thyrfing and the artworks of Arkona and Månegarm are also drawn by him.
But on the forthcoming album not only the graphic artist, but also Tina Stabel vocalist and Axel Römer bagpiper – who also contributed on many earlier albums – played bigger role than before. Besides being guest musicians they also participated in composing: this is why there are more female vocals and Highland bagpipes in the tracks than on the previous materials. With the support of these folk musicians and stringed instruments Eternal Defiance became the most folkish album of the Rhenish Celts and we can also feel the aspiration for making a more epic, movie soundtrack-like atmosphere (elevated keyboard themes, brasses, etc.). If we listen to the entire album in one row, we can spontaneously see the scenes of a spectacular historical movie with our spiritual eyes – if you don’t have so wide imagination, the music video for March Of Conquest can be a source. Besides the epic intro, two (or with the bonus folk song cover, three) acoustic pieces soften the quite smashing album. In the other songs, mid-tempo parts are altering with hard grindings and acoustic, symphonic turns. The tracks like the clip-song with catchy folk chorus, the marching Inner Sanctum, the epic Beneath The Red Eagle (especially its melodic parts with female vocals), Pair Dadeni with its bagpipe tunes or Defiant Dreams with its strong riffs and keyboard/stringed themes are memorable. The complete material and the independent songs can also stand their ground; only the drum themes become a bit boring during the 45 minutes of the CD.
Suidakra always published high quality materials, they didn’t really innovate with this disc; they “just” accomplished their average high standard. The increase of the folkish and epic elements benefited the sound: it strengthened the band’s musical world and with this they established the opportunity to become more famous and successful internationally. So I hope they’ll continue their tour after Heidenfest 2013 in the rest of Europe and also the guest musicians will come with them!
