ENGLISH VERSION:

Syven is a partly acoustic dark folk project by two Finnish musicians, Aslak Tolonen and Andy Koski-Semmens. Their debut album, Aikaintaite, is a mixture of different styles, making it difficult to put the project into only one box. At times the album sounds quite ambient, with hints of neofolk, while on the other times you can hear darkwave elements, created by deep male vocals.

The beginning of the album is done in a kind of shaman manner, with the continuous beat and gradually added elements such as chants, instrumentation, and owls hooting in the background. By the end of the first song, Syvyys, there’s a distorted guitar riff added, to remind us again that this is an album that is still rather on the ambient metal side than just pure shaman music. The second song on the album is Jäljet, but the transition between the two is barely noticeable. This same notion appears throughout the whole album. There are only five tracks, all of which are quite lengthy, but they merge into one relentless flow. They comprise many different ideas led by instruments such as acoustic guitar and kantele, the traditional instrument of Finland. At certain points, they add what sounds like keyboards, creating sounds of nature as well, to fit better with the dominating ambient side of the album. Some keyboard themes get repeated throughout the album, which one may find a bit boring after a while, until you finally get drawn into this dark shaman-chanting world.

To keep the album from getting too repetitive, there are certain parts where the style changes drastically. For example, it happens between the second and the third song, where the music becomes calmer, but the background echoing chanting remains ominous. I particularly liked how the vocals differ on the album. Sometimes they sound almost like growls, while at other times their baritone side fully reminds of ancient tribal chanting. In the light of this, kantele fits perfectly with the music, being the instrument of Finnish mythology. The song Jäänkätkemä represents an interlude in the album, because it slows down by concentrating on the sound of kantele and vibrating male vocals, rather than on heaviness or progressiveness.

In order to accept this album, a listener has to take into consideration what kind of an album it is. Those who are expecting some kind of pagan metal music here will not be satisfied, but those with open minds about ambient metal combined with traditional folk elements from Finnish history will find themselves genuinely enjoying this one hour long record. The bad side, though, might be the division into five tracks of considerable length, which makes it a bit difficult to coordinate throughout the album. However, this might as well be the point of an ambient album – the flow of never-ending melodies, fulfilled by guitars and chanting.
