A The Eternal 2003-ban alakult Melbourne-ben, ötszámos promo EP-jüknek köszönhetően még abban az évben aláírhatták két lemezre szóló szerződésüket a finn Firebox Records-szal. 2004 nyarán meg is jelent az első albumuk The Sombre Light Of Isolation címmel.

A The Eternal nem bújik a korábbi lemezeken kialakított hangzás biztonsága mögé, hanem újabb utakra lép.

Hosszú felvezetővel, egyfajta beépített introval indul a Silence, mely igen ígéretes, a HIM és a 69 Eyes vonalán mozgó, szellős, borongós rock nóta sok szintis, digiális zajongással, enyhe romantikus hangulattal. Szintén gótrockos, zongorás, melankolikus dal a hangulatos dallamos szólót hozó Without Reason. Suttogós, már-már balladisztikus, női kórusos, extrák nélküli szerzemény a Lost Our Way.

Lassú, sokáig elektro kopogásra épülő, kissé terjengős refrénű, a szólóban csúcsra járó eposz a Walk Beside You. Egzotikus hangulatú, lelki szemeim elé hastáncosokat idéző atmoszférájú kellemes szösszenet a címadó Kartika, melyet a CD leglendületesebb track-je, a bólogatós refrénű Means For An Ending követ tökös szólóval és zongorás zárással.

ENGLISH VERSION:

The Eternal was formed in 2003 in Melbourne and thanks to their five-tracks promotional EP they could sign their two-records contract with the Finnish Firebox Records in the same year. Their first album was released during the summer of 2004 entitled The Sombre Light of Isolation. Already with this disc, they made it through to Europe and were introduced in the Kerrang! magazine. And in 2005, the second album, Sleep of Reason – mixed at Finnvox – was released, which they could later introduce during the Australian tour of Opeth. In 2007, they toured across Europe again and they came to Hungary, too.

According to the infosheet, Kartika is the most diverse and ambitious album of the band with fresh harmonies, and careful design. This album guides the listener on a wide musical palette stretching from emotional songs such as Brighter Day or Walk Beside You to the epic Blood, with its touch of eastern culture. Catchy, melodic, dark and beautiful. The Eternal does not hide behind the sound created on previous albums, but sets its foot on new paths.

Silence starts with a long introduction, a built-in intro, if you like and turns out to be a quite promising cloudy, airy rock song on the track of Him and The 69 Eyes with digital noises, keyboards and a bit romantic mood. Without Reason is another gothic rock-like melancholic song with pianos and a nice melodic solo. Next, there comes a pure, extra-free, almost balladistic song with whispers and female choirs in the form of Lost Our Way. Self Inflicted – which can be mentioned for its melodic solo – is opened by a nice, but unpleasantly short guitar melody. One of the best songs on the album with its nine minutes, Blood, starts with and is built on oriental melodies, later bringing Him-similarities in its vocals again. Its choir is exceptional, and it also has one of the solos with the most feelings. A Pale Reflection starts with an easy acoustic part and is later made quite interesting by its characteristic keyboard melodies; its crawling, elongated sounds and riffs.

Sunshine is a pop-like (not in the wrong sense) ballad in which there is a nice solo on piano base and also an oooh-choir, but still the refrain is not 100% as we could expect of such song. Illuminate is a kind of goth”n”roll song, a dynamic, slightly typical but moody concert and party hit.
Walk beside You is a slow epos climaxing in its solo, building out from a long, electronic knocking, and having a slightly expansive refrain. The eponymous Kartika is an exotic and pleasant song, its atmosphere bringing up the image of bellydancers, followed by the most dynamic song of the cd, Means for an Ending with a headbanging refrain, a muscular solo and a piano-filled end. Brighter Day gets stronger slowly and begins with effected vocals becoming wave-like in both its tempo and dynamics; apart from the vocals, this could even be a Nickelback song.

I have to confess that what we hear on Kartika is not bad, what”s more, it is even pleasant. Unofortunately, too few moments got stuck in my mind and the expected emotional depths did not came either. Even though the songs are not monotonous, they are still middle-class. When I listened to songs on their myspace page – now I know that those songs were older ones – I encountered far more groovy and dark music, which made me curious. After listening to the previous albums, I realised that those had more traditional, melancholic and emotional music (this can also be seen on their covers). Those, with their long songs, approach music rather from the metal side and Kartika shows a more rock-like, sometimes radio-friendly face of The Eternal. This is not a definitive problem, because actually everything’s alright, the instruments, the voice, and the sound… but the somewhat more grim and breathing earlier discs are more enjoyable for me.
