A tagok a más formációikra jellemző zenei hatásokat doom metal stílusjegyekkel egészítették ki, nagyjából így írható le a The Flight Of Sleipnir zenéje.

A „The Flight Of Sleipnir” mondhatni, megoldotta a legnehezebb feladatot, hiszen a debütalbum remek elegye a doom metalnak, heavy metalnak, számos progresszív megoldással karöltve.

Egyet elárulok: magas a mérce.

ENGLISH VERSION:

The Flight Of Sleipnir from Colorado was formed by David Csicsely (who can be familiar from bands such as Acheronian dirge, Nexhymn) and Clayton Cushman (also from Acheronian Dirge). Their aim was to set up a project blending their commitment to progressive music and lyrical themes inspired by ancient Scandinavia. They completed musical influences from their other bands with doom metal characteristics, mostly the music of The Flight Of Sleipnir can be described that way. The duo recorded a demo in 2008 titled Wisdom Calls For Sacrifice. After the recordings, they soon started to prepare their full-length which was finally released in September by No Colours Records.

I think that nowadays bands do not have an easy task to create something unique and everlasting especially in that case when the result is a mixture of genres close to them. We can say that The Flight OF Sleipnir has solved the hardest task since their debut has become an excellent mixture of doom metal, heavy metal, together with several progressive ideas. The clean and extreme vocals make the album balanced, and the result flying and floating. The record can be seen as a journey, musically, no part can be picked out, you have to listen to it in its entirety.
It creates a great atmosphere with its modest, mostly mid-paced ideas, well-written riffs. There are several influences in these five songs. If we only take the opener with its 19 minutes, it provides much space for well-created changes. Due to that, here and there certain themes remind me of the musical world of classic doom bands which turn into acoustic passages, followed by an ambient part. It’s hard to describe with words, because these sharp borders reach each other all the time even within a single song. The melodies aren’t over-complex, even due to their simplicity they are cool and memorable. The sound is both modern and vintage at the same time, this adds much to the mood also. At times it feels like listening to early Pentagram, Primoridal and the acoustic things of Borknagar at the same time. These are mainly mood-wise influences, musically it’s something totally unique, something new, showing beyond any categorization. It’s both unsettling and relaxing what can be heard during the playtime of the record. Instrumental passages, doomy parts, folkish insets, extreme vocals, full choruses, excellent solos, psychedelic jazz-like drumming showing from the first Black Sabbath to an entirely progressive music.

The externals can be attributed mainly to Northern mythology though this is also evident from the track titles. Among others, the band’s webpage is also decorated with runes. All in all, I can say that the debut of TFOS is one of the most moody stuff of the year. Thos who like the depth in music, and like to receive the indescribable vibration represented by similar music consisting of several elements, Algiz+Berkanan is recommended to be purchased. My rating is relative and I guarantee that I’ll give more for the next one if the band at least repeats this standard. One thing is sure: that standard is high.
