Pár évvel ezelőtt egy kellemes gothic/black együttest ismertem meg a Theatres des Vampires-ben. Ezek után meglepő volt szembesülni vele, hogy az olasz formáció teljesen a mainstream gothic irányába ment el. Így igaz: a lemezen nem kevés elektronikával megtámogatott dallamos gothic metál hallható annak minden kliséjével: egyszerű gitártémák, fülbemászó szinti dallamok, és egy melodramatikusan éneklő hölgy. Ha mindez rosszul hangzik, akkor leszögezném, hogy egyáltalán nem az.
A Kain című intro után a vicces billentyűprüntyögéssel kezdődő Unspoken Words következik. A refrén nagyszerű, két hallgatás után garantáltan megragad a fülben. Az ezt követő Rain egy The Cult feldolgozás. Tudom, nagy szégyen, de nem ismerem az eredetit; mindazonáltal nekem tetszik.
A Dust egy igazi gothic sláger, engem kicist a Sisters of Mercy-től emlékeztet a „Temple of Love”-ra. A háromhangos zongorafutammal iszonyatosan geil, de nekem azért tetszik. Sajnos azért megmutatkozik egy gyengeség is, mégpedig Sonya Scarlet éneklése. Általában jól énekel, de néha – így különösképp ennek a nótának a refrénjében – túljátssza a szerepét, és úgy siránkozik, mint akit nyúznak. Arra gondolok, hogy túl sokszor bukkan fel a hangjában a vibrato, ami hosszú távon idegesítő. Hozzátenném viszont, hogy a következő, „From the Deep” c. dalban viszont szépen énekel – operásan, mégis jól megjegyezhetően, karakteresen. Ugyanebben a nótában csendül fel először a férfiének, aminek sűrűbb használata szerintem színesebbé tehetné az albumot.
A hangzás jó, nagyon erősen szinti- és énekorientált, ami persze ennél a műfajnál természetes. Az elektronikus effektet használatát jó ötletnek tartom, és szerintem érdemes lenne továbbmenniük ebbe az irányba, a sablonosság elkerülése végett. Ötletes pl., ahogy a Blood Addiction-ben használják, ez némi plusz keménységet ad az egyébként elég lightos zenének. Itt felhangzik némi keményebb férfiének, amely a Nightwish-es Tuomaséra emlékeztet.
A Butterfly (ez már cím a javából!…) az első töltelékszám – ahogy lenni szokott, ezek egy tömbben találhatók az album második felében. Sajnos a refrén a L’art pur l’art „Hányszor lehet büntetlenül elénekelni egy refrént?” c. klasszikusát juttatja eszembe, ráadásul a férfiének is elég rémes, medvebrummogásra hasonlít.
A Wherever You Are ígéretesen kezdődik, egy jó kis szinti témával, de sajnos ezt lerontja, hogy Sonya itt is túljátssza a szerepét. Kárpótol ezért valamelyest a Two Seconds diszkós pulzálása, erre valószínűleg táncolni is jól lehet. A refrén jól el van találva, ha már teljesen elhagyták a black elemeket, akkor alapvetően ez lehetne az-az irány, amelybe szívesen látnék némi elmozdulást.
A címadó utolsó szám viszont a leghatározottabban rossz, nagyon dagályos és unalmas. Ja, és ha még egyszer meghallom egy gothic számban az „angel” szót, tökön fogok szúrni valakit (nem magamat, hogy elejét vegyem egy vicces javaslatnak.) Összességében élvezhető lemez, de inkább csak erős közepes. A műfaj rajongói kellemesen elüthetik vele az idejüket.

ENGLISH VERSION:
Some years ago I came to know Theatres des Vampire as a pleasent gothic/black metal band. That said, it was surprising to realize that this Italian formation moved toward a totally mainstream sort of gothic. That’s true: on the disc we can hear electronically supported melodic gothic metal with all its clichés: simple guitar themes, catchy synth melodies, and a lady with melodramatic vocals. If all this sounds bad, I hasten to stress that it isn’t at all.
After the intro Kain comes Unspoken Words with its funny key beeps. The chorus is excellent, and sticks into the ear in two listenings. The then coming Rain is a Cult cover. I know, it’s shame, but I don’t know the original one; anyway, I like it.
Dust is a true gothic hit, a bit makes me think of „Temple of Love” by Sisters of Mercy. The piano melody, consisting of three is sounds, is terribly cheesy, yet I happen to like it. Unfortunately, a weakness also becomes clear here: Sonya Scarlet’s singing. Usually she is good, but sometimes – especially in the chorus of this song – she overplays her role and whines as it she were being teemed. I mean, she uses the vibrato way too often, which is irritating in the long run. I would like to add, though, that the then coming „From the Deep” she does sing nicely – a bit opera-ish yet memorable and characteristic. In the same song we can hear the male vocals the first time, the more frequent use of which would make the album more colorful, I think.
The production is good, and heavily synth and vocals oriented, which is of course natural in this genre. The use of electronic effects I find a good idea, and I think it would be worth proceeding in this direction, in order to avoid clichés. It’s smart, for example, as they are using it in „Blood Addiction”, giving some plus thoughness to the otherwise light music. This is the place where the somewhat harsher male vocals can be heard firts time – it’s a bit reminiscent of Tuomas from Nightwish.
Butterfly (this is a title, indeed!…) is the first filler – as usual, these are in a row in the second half of the album. Unfortunately the chorus reminds me of L’art pour l’art’s classic „How often can you repeat a chorus without any consequence?” What is more, the male vocals here are quite horrendous, similar to bear-humming.
The beginning of „Wherever You Are” holds a promise, with its good synth theme, but is unfortunately wasted by Sonya who overplays again. Some consolation is given by the disco-like pulsation of „Two Seconds”, one could even dance while this is being played. The chorus is fine; once they totally abandoned the black metal elements, basically this is the direction in which I would gladly see some shift.
The last one, the title track is, however, definitely bad; pathetic and boring. Oh, and one more I hear the word „angel” in a gothic track, I will stab someone in the cock (not myself, to prevent jokes). All in all, an enjoyable listen, but rather only strong mediocre. Those fond of the genre may have a good time with it.
