Azt hiszem, a THORNIUM debütáló albumának újrakiadására joggal mondható az időszerű jelző (bár bakeliten valamivel korábban kijött, az tény…). Az első CD nyomást a mára már megszűnt holland Necromantic Gallery Productions adta ki 1995-ben, amikor a Black Metal zene nagy népszerűségnek örvendett, valószínűleg ezért is lett egy kissé elveszett ez az anyag akkoriban. Az akkori norvég, atmoszférikus dömpingben kissé elsikkadt a svéd alakulat 9 számos munkája. Jó, ennek valószínűleg az is oka volt, hogy nem volt éppen a stílus mérföldköve a Dominions of the Eclipse, ha a dalokat nézzük, furcsa módon azonban, mégis van egy olyan sajátos bája, atmoszférája a zenének, ami a minőségi szót csalja a számra (igaz, mindez 2011-ben történik…). A felvétel egyébként elég jól beilleszthető a 1995 körüli érába.
Északi Black Metalt hallhatunk, engem leginkább a korai SATYRICON dolgaira emlékeztetnek a nóták (első két album időszaka!). A gyors, vadabb, sodróbb témák mellett jól megférnek a hangulatos szintetizátor betétek, vagy torzítatlan gitárrészek, és szép, néhol középkori érzést hordozó dallamok is. Az énekhang kissé átlagos, tipikus északi BM károgás, mégis jól illik ezekhez a dalokhoz. Érdekesség, hogy a dalok közül az utolsó, hangulatos, sötét instrumentális szintetizátor szerzemény (Förmörkelsens Herravälde) újra felvett változatban került fel. Ezt a lépést nem igazán értettem, mert az eredeti dallal semmi gond nem volt, ám kivételesen az új verzió abszolút nem sikerült rosszul, talán még sötétebb is, mint elődje, de nem különbözik drasztikus mértékben attól.
Az újrakiadáshoz természetesen bónusz felvételek is dukálnak általában, s itt sincs másképp a dolog. A teljes lemez összesen, majdnem 80 perc játékidő tesz ki. Nézzük, mik is ezek. Elsőként egy 1995-ös dal a Remain in Chaos szólal meg, amit 2011 nyarán rögzített a zenekar. Tudtommal, ez a dal hivatalosan nem jelent meg sehol eddig, valószínűleg valamiféle kiadatlan próbatermi anyagon porosodhatott eddig. Azt kell mondjam, a dal egy fokkal közelebb áll a THORNIUM újabb kori, némileg agresszívebb irányvonalához, ám nem rossz, a tradicionális riff a dal közepén pedig egyenesen tökéletes! A hangzás teszi egy kicsit modernebbé az amúgy jó atmoszférával rendelkező szerzeményt. A Reign of Terror már egy újabb keletű darab, agresszív, ostorozó témákkal, pengeként hasító riffekkel, és néhány súlyosabb betéttel. Nem rossz ez sem, de az ezt követő három dal, ami az 1993-as North Storms of the Bestial Goatsign demo anyagát jelenti, nálam még inkább nyerő. Korához képest OK hangzással hallhatjuk a hangulatos, hamisítatlan Black Metal dalokat, és az ének itt jobban hangzik, mint a nagylemezen. A demot egyébként még egyedül Typh játszotta fel akkoriban!
A digipack kiállítású kiadvány a sok extrákkal együtt (de már önmagában a nagylemez anyaga miatt is) érdemes a beszerzésre az északi Black Metal rajongóinak.

I think that for THORNIUM’s re-release the word timely can be justifiably used (although it was reissued on vinyl some time prior to this…). The first CD press of this stuff was put out by now defunct Dutch label called Necromantic Gallery Productions, when Black Metal was rather popular so that is why the material got lost a bit back then. The nine-tracker of the Swedish bands was drowned in the flood of atmospheric Norwegian stuffs: okay, one reason might be the fact that, as far as the tracks themselves are concerned, Dominions of the Eclipse is not a milestone of the genre, but, strangely enough, the music has such a charm and mood which makes me use the word quality (true, I say that in 2011…). Anyway, the recording itself can be easily put into the era of 1995.
We can hear Northern Black Metal, which reminds me of early SATYRICON (first two albums’ era!). So, besides the fast, more aggressive and drifting themes we can find also moody synth passages, clean guitar parts or nice melodies carrying sometimes medieval feelings. The vocals are kinda average, typical Northern BM vocals, but fit nicely the songs. An interesting thing is that the last, moody, instrumental synth track of the full-length (Förmörkelsens Herravälde) was re-recorded for this reissue. I do not really understand the reason for this actually because there was nothing wrong with the original one, but the new version, exceptionally, turned out quite good, maybe even darker than the original, not differing drastically from the original.
Usually, reissue include bonus stuff and this is also the case here. The whole stuff with the bonus is almost 80 minutes in length, so let’s see what we are offered now. First, we get to hear a track from 1995 entitled Remain in Chaos which was recorded in the Summer of 2011. as far as I know this piece was never officially released so it may have come from a dusty rehearsal tape. I have to say that the song is closer to the direction of the newer, somewhat more aggressive THORNIUM stuff but it’s not bad, and the traditional riff in the middle of the track is nothing but perfect! It is the sound which makes the song with a cool atmosphere a bit more modern. Reign of Terror is a newer piece with aggressive, whipping and razor-sharp riffs and some heavier parts. It is not bad either, but the remaining three tracks, which is the material of the 1993 demo, are the real winner for me. We can hear the moody Black Metal songs with an okay sound (compared to its age), and the vocals sound better than on the full-length. Back then, the demo was played by Typh only!
For the fans of Northern Black Metal, the digipack edition reissue is recommended (it is worth only for the full-length, actually).
