A csata metal finn atyját, a Turisast senkinek sem kell bemutatni, tehát bevezetésképp inkább nosztalgiázok egy kicsit. Első lemezük megjelenése táján ismertem meg őket, egyike voltak az általam legkorábban megismert és megkedvelt (folk) metal zenekaroknak. A The Heart of Turisas EP, és a Battle Metal és a The Varangian Way lemezek azóta is nagy kedvenceim, viking és hősi tematikájú metal terén verhetetlen mesterművek! Meg a Rasputin single is nagyszerű matéria volt, a lazább vonalról persze. Azonban a 2011-es Stand Up And Fight számomra már komoly csalódást okozott. Két dal zseniális rajta, akár a The Varangian Way-en is szerepelhettek volna (The March of the Varangian Guard, Hunting Pirates), a többi dalban viszont csak pár momentum tetszett. Összességében nem volt egy rossz lemez, csak szerintem túlontúl elment epikus/szimfonikus/filmzenés irányba. A következő csalódás pedig ezután ért: kilépett két oszlopos tag a bandából, a basszer Hannes Horma és a harmonikás Netta Skog – utóbbi hangszer helyére ráadásul szintetizátor került. Koncerten már így láttam őket a 2011-es magyar Heidenfest keretében, de élőben még mindezek után is rendkívül meggyőzőek voltak. 2012-ben aztán dobos poszton is személycsere történt…
Így jutottunk el 2013-ig, mikor is hírül adta a banda, hogy nyáron érkezik az újabb matéria. Június végén pedig publikáltak egy dalt az albumcímmel illetve borítóval együtt. Külön-külön is ledöbbentettek, de együtt konkrétan sokkoltak – engem is és a rajongók többségét is. Elsőre meg voltam győződve, hogy a zenekar csak poénnak szánja és bolondját járatja velünk. Aztán ahogy közeledett a kiadás időpontja (augusztus 23./26.), megkaptam a promóanyagot. Igen, az új lemez címe Turisas2013, borítóján pedig a frontember-zenekarvezető Mathias Nygårdból látható egy szelet, amint új kosztümében, a korábbi barbár öltözet és szegecselt motoros bőrszerkó ötvözetében pózol a fehér háttér előtt.
És eljutottunk a lemez zenei részéhez. A banda nyilatkozatai szerint a cél az volt, hogy olyan lemezt csináljanak, ami a koncertek hangulatát és hangzását idézi. Hát, az nem nagyon jött össze, alig érzem pár helyen élőnek a hangzást, ellenben tele van rézfúvósokkal és nagyzenekari elemekkel, melyek élőben samplerről szólnak. A folkos részek már a Stand Up…-on is háttérbe szorultak, e lemezen pedig alig kaptak helyet – ezen a harmonika kiesése sem segített. Ahol a hegedű komoly szerepet játszik, ott általában a dalok hangulatával van bajom. Ezzel szemben billentyűtémából jóval több van, mint a korai anyagokon. Ezek egy része epikus, illik a korábbi vonalhoz, de sok kifejezetten kísérletezős és szokatlan (a nyitó For Your Own Good jó példa mindkettőre).
A metalos hangszerelés terén egyaránt hallhatunk erős megoldásokat (mint a szóló a Ten More Miles-ban), egyszerűbb, unalmas témákat (mint az Into The Free humppás riffjei és buta dobtémája), sok régisulis heavy metal és progresszív rock témát és oda nem illő részeket, mint a Piece By Piece-ben. Folkos részek terén a Run Bhang-Eater, Run!-ban kapunk egy jó kis balkáni cigány, ill. orientális témát, ezt azonban elrontja a közbeékelődő és oda nem illő dzsesszes, női nyögdécselős rész. A fura átvezetőt leszámítva azonban még mindig ez az egyik legerősebb új dal. A No Good Story Ever Starts With Drinking Tea címének megfelelően egy gyors, mulatós nóta. Ezzel nem is lenne gond, a Turisas korábban is megénekelte a témát, e tétel azonban túl komolytalanra sikeredett. Olyan, mintha Mathias vokálozna egy gyengébb Alestorm-dalban – persze mindez értékelhető egyfajta komikus reakcióként a folk metal színtéren oly népszerű korsólengetős dalokra. Szerencsére a lemez végére magára talált a csapat, a The Days Passed és a We Ride Together teljes egészében erős dalok lettek, melyek megállják a helyüket a Turisas-életműben.
A dalszövegek szinte teljesen átfordultak direktebb filozofikus irányba, történelmi háttér nélkül. Jómagam igen szerettem a szofisztikált megoldásokat, melyek történelmi közegbe helyezve, indirekten utaltak a modern kor betegségeire. Most ilyesmi lett a Greek Fire, de nem éri el a Stand Up… szövegeinek színvonalát, míg zeneileg unalmas, a sikítós vokálok pedig furák benne. Néhány szöveg kifejezetten komolytalannak hat (pl. a Ten More Miles refrénje és a héliumos ének az Into The Free-ben), némelyik pedig szánt szándékkal az, mint a Run Bhang-Eater, Run! és a No Good Story…. A komolyabb szövegek terén két fő mondanivalója van a lemeznek, az egyik az összetartás, a másik, még fontosabb pedig a szabadságvágy.
Összességében szerintem leginkább ez a szabadságvágy jellemzi a lemezt – megmutatjuk, hogy azt csinálhatunk, amit akarunk, befolyásoktól mentesen. – Szövegileg ez leginkább az Into The Free-ben jön le (a gagyi lemezcím helyett szerintem ez lehetett volna a címadó), míg zeneileg végig ezt a mondanivalót érzem. Maga az aspiráció nagyon jó, hisz az problémás, ha egy zenekar a „keresletnek” megfelelően alakítja „kínálatát”, zenéjét, de úgy érzem, a finn banda átesett a ló túloldalára.
A banda örök zsenialitása, hogy fülbemászó melódiákat tudnak írni, azonban a Turisas2013-on a zseniális részeket, gyenge, illetve feleslegesen kísérletezős részek váltják. Ezeket vissza kellett volna fogni, és lemez végén hallható nótákhoz hasonló stílusú dalokkal kellett volna megtölteni a teljes korongot. Ezért inkább megérte volna várni még egy-másfél évet, mert a Turisas2013 nem lett se túl Turisas-os, se folk/csata metalos. Persze, ha nem Turisasról lenne szó, nem lennének ekkora elvárásaim. Így azonban sajnos az erős pillanatok ellenére ez a banda eddigi leggyengébb kiadványa. Nagyon bízok benne, hogy mielőbb visszatalálnak a már jól kitaposott „varég útra”…

ENGLISH VERSION:
Everybody knows the Finnish pioneers of battle metal, Turisas so now my reminiscence stands here as a preamble instead of the introduction of the band. I got acquainted with them around the release date of their first album – they were one of the first (folk) metal bands I started to listen and became the fan of. The Heart of Turisas EP and the albums Battle Metal and The Varangian Way are still my big favourites; invincible masterpieces of the Viking and heroic themed metal scene! And Rasputin single was also a great release – from the fun side of course. But then Stand Up And Fight was a big disappointment for me in 2011. It contains two fantastic tracks which could be even on The Varangian Way (The March of the Varangian Guard, Hunting Pirates) but in the other songs I like only some moments. To sum up it wasn’t a weak album but in my opinion they moved towards epic/symphonic/movie soundtrack style too much. Then came the next disappointment: two important members left the band: the bassist Hannes Horma and the accordionist Netta Skog – and instead of accordion, keyboards were added. Then I’ve seen this line-up on my first Turisas gig at Heidenfest 2011 in Hungary but in spite of everything they were bombastic on concert. Then the drummer also left the band in 2012…
This is how 2013 has arrived when news came out saying that the new album will be out this summer. And at the end of June they published a song together with the album-title and the front cover. Each one was stunning but together they were shocking – for me and for the majority of the fans. First I thought it’s just a joke and the band makes April’s fools of the fans. Then as the release date (August 23rd/26th) was approaching, I got the promo material. Yes, the album is entitled Turisas2013 and on the front cover we can see a slice of the frontman–band-leader Mathias Nygård who is posing in his new costume – a mix of the earlier barbaric clothes and pinned leather biker jacket before a white background.
And what about the music? The band announced that their main aim was to make an album with a more organic, more live sound. They weren’t so successful; I feel this live atmosphere only in some parts. But on the other hand it’s full with brasses and orchestral elements – at concerts they’re played by samplers. The folkish parts were already pushed into the background on Stand Up… while here this process was continued even more – losing the accordion was an important stage towards this. There are songs where violin plays important role – but there usually I have problem with the atmosphere of the song. For another thing there are much more keyboard themes than on the early materials. Some of them are epic and fits the earlier style but many of them are absolutely experimental and unusual (the starter For Your Own Good is a good example for both).
Getting on to the metal instrumentation we can hear also strong stuff (like the solo in Ten More Miles), simpler, boring melodies (like the humppa-like riffs and stupid drum theme of Into The Free), many oldschool heavy metal and progressive rock themes and also parts which totally don’t fit in with the song, like in Piece By Piece. If we check out the folk elements, we get a good Balkan Gypsy or oriental tune in Run Bhang-Eater, Run! but it’s destroyed by an impacted and not fitting jazz part with the moaning of a woman. But aside from this weird interlude this is still one of the strongest new tracks. As its title suggests No Good Story Ever Starts With Drinking Tea is a fast party song. Basically it’s not a problem as Turisas has already sung about this topic, but this song became too comic. It’s like a weaker Alestorm piece with Mathias as guest vocalist – but of course it could be even a funny reaction for the popular pint-waving folk metal songs. Fortunately at the end of the album the band found their real path; the complete The Days Passed and We Ride Together are strong enough to fit into Turisas’ life-work.
The lyrics almost completely turned into a more direct philosophical direction without historical background. I really loved their sophisticated solutions where they just indirectly denoted the problems of the modern era building the denotations into a historical scene. Now you can find this kind of lyrics in Greek Fire but it doesn’t reach the level of the lyrics in Stand Up…, while its music is boring and its screamed vocals are just weird. Some lyrics totally give me a comic feeling (e.g. the chorus of Ten More Miles and the chipmunk singing in Into The Free) while some of them are intended to be comic, like Run Bhang-Eater, Run! and No Good Story…. In the serious lyrics there’re two main matters; one is the importance of togetherness and the other is freedom.
I think this aspiration for freedom is the main characteristic of the album – we’ll show that we can do whatever we want, free from any pressure. – In lyrics I feel this message especially in Into The Free (it’d be a great title-track instead of the dumb recent title) while in music I feel it from the beginning till the last chord. Basically this aspiration is very good because the problem starts there when a band writes music as “supply” for “demand” but now I feel the Finnish band carried the things too far.
They have an awesome vein to write catchy melodies but on Turisas2013 the genial parts are alternating with weak and unnecessary experimental parts. They should decrease the number of these and fill the whole album with songs which are similar in style to the last tracks. I’d have rather waited for another one or one and a half year for the new release, because Turisas2013 is neither really “Turisas-like”, nor folk/battle metal-like. Of course if it wasn’t Turisas I wouldn’t have such expectations. But it’s Turisas and despite of the strong moments it is their weakest material up to now. I really hope they’ll return to the well-trodden “Varangian way” as soon as possible…
