Ez a szokatlan, mégis fontos téma olyan szókimondó szövegű dalokkal jár, mint pl. a Mare of My Night vagy a Liv Kristine-nel közösen énekelt The Lay of Our Love.

Külön kiemelkedik e téren a Nation, a Lady of the Slain és a címadó Valkyrja szólója – érezhető, hogy Terji ezúttal több gitártémát hozott. Vendégként a Leaves’ Eyes frontasszonya mellett a Nile-os George Kollias is közreműködik az anyagon, ő felel az összes dobtémáért, mivel az alapító dobos Kári Streymoy a lemezfelvételek előtt kilépett a zenekarból. Kollias technikás dobolása és Liv Kristine érzelmes éneke sokat hozzáad a lemez amúgy is magas színvonalához. A norvég énekesnővel közös melodikus duett mellett nagyon erősek a Grindavísan már-már himnuszszerű északi kórusai és persze Heri is végig hozza a szokásos színvonalat – az Into the Sky és az Another Fallen Brother vokáljai különösen fülbemászóak és erőteljesek. A lemezre bónuszként felkerült két klasszikus metaldarab feldolgozása is, a Where Eagles Dare az Iron Maidentől és a Cemetery Gates a Panteratól, ezekhez azonban egyelőre nem volt szerencsém.

A feröeri trió új korongja nagyszerűre sikeredett, színvonala erősen vetekszik eddigi kedvencemmel, a By the Light of the Northern Starral.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Maybe there’s no need of a detailed introduction of the most famous (metal) band of Denmark’s autonomous Faroe Islands, Týr. Namely they are representing Scandinavian culture and Nordic heathenry from 1998 without a break. Their chosen instrument to do so is metal music: they mingle heavy and progressive metal with folkish riffs, folk and Viking themed, often Faroese lyrics – also covering some very archaic folk songs, too. With their unique style they don’t really fit the recent, partially conventional and cliché-like, often only rejoicing folk and viking metal bands. They’ll release their new, seventh full-length album via their new label, Metal Blade on September 13th – on the day of their next Hungarian gig, hurray!

The concept album entitled Valkyrja talks about a timeless but also rarely mentioned topic – taking it to the world of the Vikings. The main character is an anonymous Viking who leaves his woman to impress Odin’s daughters, the valkyries during many battles and then to die a heroic death to get at Freyja, goddess of love. So indirectly it’s about the women’s influence on men, about what a man is willing to do for a woman – also including the feelings of disappointment and anger. This unusual but also important topic gave birth to such free-tongued tracks like Mare of My Night or The Lay of Our Love – a duet with Liv Kristine. And although earlier they said there’ll be only one song in Faroese language, I’m very glad that the album contains two such songs plus Nation is a bilingual one.

After analyzing the concept and the lyrics, musically speaking I should mention that on the latest albums the band found the best length for their style – so fortunately the new longplayer doesn’t contains more than 10-minute-long tracks. Despite of this or even because of this the progressive solos and guitar melodies are absolutely strong and catchy. Nation, Lady of the Slain and the solo of the title-song, Valkyrja are especially excellent this way – we can feel that Terji now put on more guitar themes. As a guest Týr didn’t only invite the frontlady of Leaves’ Eyes but also George Kollias from Nile – he played all the drum themes because the founder drummer, Kári Streymoy left the band before the studio session. Kollias’ technical drumming and the highly emotional vocals of Liv Kristine strengthen the material very much – however it has a really high quality anyway. Besides the melodic duet with the Norwegian singer, the almost hymn-like Nordic choirs of Grindavísan are also very strong and of course Heri achieves his average performance again – the vocals in Into the Sky and Another Fallen Brother are especially catchy and powerful. The album also contains two classic metal covers as bonus pieces – Iron Maiden’s Where Eagles Dare and Pantera’s Cemetery Gates, but I had no chance to hear them yet.

The new album of the Faroese trio is awesome; its quality almost reaches my earlier favourite, By the Light of the Northern Star. Maybe only an instantly hitting Viking anthem is missing from Valkyrja similar to Hold the Heathen Hammer High from 2009. But after a while, Blood of Heroes and/or Another Fallen Brother can receive this rank – it’ll become clear on the concerts! But not only the music of Valkyrja is fantastic – the band has always had detailed and artistic graphic design but in my opinion, this one is the best so far with the levitating goddess over the nocturnal battle-field. (She can be either Freyja or Hel or a valkyrie.)

If you can, purchase the album and visit the next gig of the band! In September and October they’re touring with Finntroll and Skálmöld in Europe – I’ll check them out in Budapest for sure!
