A dal lassú, andalító népies tétel akusztikus hangszereléssel. An Raibh Tú ar an gCarraig.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Irish Uaigneas (pronounced as “Ooignuss”, the meaning of this Irish Gaelic word is “loneliness”) can be called a newcomer in the not too large Gaelic/Celtic doom metal scene. The band started in 1995, but was put on hold in ’98 without any epideictic results. By the way I shouldn’t call it band, but rather project, because it’s the solo-project of the frontman of Mael Mórdha, Roibéard Ó Bogail (more archaic form: Roibéard Uá Bóghaedhil). His first EP, titled Buí was released in September, 2011.

The first track of the four-song EP is the instrumental title-song, Buí, which is the name of a South West Irish goddess. The band is inspired by this mythological figure and the landscapes associated with her and the early Irish poetry, the “sean nós singing”. The song is a slow, sweet folkish one with acoustic instrumentation. The second song, An Cailleach ‘gus an Bard Bocht follows this way with great piano theme and mystic whistle play in its intro. As the vocals appear, immediately Mael Mórdha’s gloomy, deep, nature-inspired world comes into the listener’s mind. Albeit this kind of vocals is the own one of Gaelic doom metal, I don’t really like it, but I shiver with the whistle and piano parts. The third, also very epic track is a cover of a traditional Irish song, An Raibh Tú ar an gCarraig. After the whistle, the other instruments come, the drum with tribal rhythm, the effects and the stringed instruments. The part with drums and Irish lyrics in the middle is fantastic and very strong. Despite of the Irish Gaelic titles, most of the lyrics are in English. The last, fourth song has English title, Onslaught of Storms, which is maybe the most Mael Mórdha-like song. Its hymnic choir, the keyboard theme and the low whistle solo are very strong.

Fans of the doom scene should listen to this EP, it’s a perfect debut material, but this slow, darksome world isn’t my favourite one. In spite of this I’m looking forward the first full-length album!
