A pogány és folk metal Kanada franciaajkú részén, Québecben valamiért népszerűbb, mint az amerikai ország anglofón tartományaiban. E québeci színtér jeles képviselője már 2005 óta a Valknacht is. A szimfonikus, folkos és blackes hatású pogány metal zenekar 2009 és 2011 után idén márciusban harmadik nagylemezével jelentkezik, melyet a helyi PRC Music kiadó jegyez (e kanadai kiadó gondozta egyébként két magyar banda legutóbbi anyagát is).
E harmadik korong, mely a Le Sacrifice d’Ymir („Ymir áldozata”) címet viseli, a korábbiaktól eltérően csak és kizárólag francia nyelvű tételeket tartalmaz, a téma azonban maradt vikinges illetve germános: az északi mitológiából és a germán törzsek történelméből táplálkozik a nyolc tétel. A dalszövegek mellett zeneileg sem változtatott jól bevált receptjén a tengerentúli horda. Az intró (melynek címe nem tökéletes latinsággal az „Északiak haragját” jelenti), rituális fílinggel, a tenger zajával és epikus muzsikával vezeti fel a hét hosszú dalt. Harcba hívó dobok és rézfúvósok, epikus billentyűtémák, népies furulyák egészítik ki a zúzós gitárokat és a többféle hörgést. Bár pontos infóm nincs, de ha jól sejtem, a Sur les ruines de Rome-ban („Róma romjai felett”) például a szintén kanadai Valfreya énekesnője hallható.
A legtöbb blackes pogány metal zenekartól eltérően a Valknacht nem a kásás „kult” meg „oldszkúl” hangzásra épít szerencsére, így az album hangzása tiszta és modern. Ellenben a dobtémák jellemzően egysíkúak sok helyütt, némileg szofisztikáltabb dobjátékot elbírt volna az összes tétel (olyat pl., mint a címadó átvezetőjében hallható). A lemez másik apró hátránya, hogy túl hosszúak a dalok, így némelyik dallam sűrűbben jön elő a kelleténél – ez jellemző nagyjából minden olyan lemezre, ahol 6-7 perc felettiek a tételek és itt bizony csak az intró és a zárótétel rövidebbek. Azonban egyik probléma sem olyan komoly, hogy a műfaj lelkes rajongóit zavarja, és persze vannak igazán erős momentumok is az anyagon. Ilyenek például a furulyatémák (ezeket talán a szintetizátor szolgáltatja egyébként, hisz nincs furulyásuk). Ebből a szempontból kiemelendő a De murmures et de givre („Morajlás és fagy”), melynek természeti témájához igencsak illik a népies dallamvilág. Emellett igen kellemes a rövidebbre fogott, himnikus-epikus zárótétel is.
A lemezt egy látványos, Ymir jégóriást ábrázoló borító fedi, mely a belga Kris Verwimp keze munkáját dicséri és vélhetően hasonlóan látványos a teljes booklet is. Ugyan a korong csak március 11-én jelenik meg (többféle digipack formátumban is előrendelhető), a címadó tétel single-ként már elérhető az interneten. Sok újításra vagy extrára nem kell számítani, de stílusában erős anyag lett a québeci horda friss matériája! Érdemes tehát belehallgatni!

For some reasons pagan and folk metal is more popular in Quebec, the French-speaking part of Canada than in the Anglophone regions of the American country. Valknacht is one of the significant performers of this Quebecer scene from 2005. They play symphonic, folk and blackened pagan metal and released two full-length albums in 2009 and 2011. This march they’ll release their third album via a local extreme metal label, PRC Music.
This third LP, entitled Le Sacrifice d’Ymir (“The Sacrifice of Ymir”) differs from the previous one in language – it has only French lyrics – but the lyrical topics remained Nordic and Germanic influenced: the eight tracks are about Norse mythology and the history of the Germanic tribes. Besides the lyrics, the approved receipt of music writing also remained. The intro (which means “Fury of the Norsemen” in not fully correct Latin) is a good prologue for the seven long songs with ritual feeling, noise of the sea and epic music. In the next hour drums and brasses call us into battle and epic keyboard melodies and folkish whistles enchant us besides grinding guitars and various growls. Although I have no exact info but if I think well, in Sur les ruines de Rome (“Over the Ruins of Rome”) we can hear the female vocalist of their compatriot Valfreya for example.
Unlike most blackened pagan metal band, fortunately Valknacht don’t use noisy “cultic” or “old-school” sound so it’s clear and modern. On the other hand the drum themes are often monotonous; they’ve should added some more sophisticated play to all tracks (e.g. similar to the one in the interlude of the title-song). My other tiny problem with the longplayer is that the tracks are too long so some melodies appear too often – it’s a typical problem with every album which contains songs longer than 6-7 minutes and only the intro and the last track are shorter here. But these problems aren’t so big that it could annoy the true fans of this genre – and of course there are really strong moments on the album, too. Like the whistle tunes (maybe played by synths because they have no flutist) – I must mention De murmures et de givre (“Murmur and Frost”); its folkish tunes fit very well the natural topic. And the short, briefer last track is also very good with its epic, elevated atmosphere.
The CD is covered by a great picture of Ymir, the ice giant created by Kris Verwimp from Belgium and I guess the complete booklet is as beautiful as the front cover. Although the album will be out only on March 11th (it can be pre-ordered in more digipack forms), the title-song is already available online. Don’t expect many innovations or extras but the new material of the Quebecer horde is strong in its own genre! Check it out!
