Bár a viking/folk metalos dán csapat, a Vanir harci kürtje csak 2009-ben szólalt meg először, mégis már második nagylemezüket jelentetik meg 2012. szeptember 10-én. Az első lemez, a Særimners Kød, mely 2011 tavaszának elején jelent meg, az északi mitológia mulatós, vidám témáit dolgozta fel pörgős, korsólengetős stílusban, néhol Finntrollos beütésekkel és sok billentyűtémával. Ezzel szemben az új matéria komolyabb légkörű, a hangsúly a középtempós hősi/viking metalon van. A dalszövegek – melyek ezúttal a dánon kívül angolul is íródtak – többségükben az skandináv történelem és mitológia legendás csatáiról szólnak, persze a 13 szám közül nem hiányoznak a csűrdöngölős témák sem.
Ez a keményebb vonal már a Dark Clouds Gather című metalos intróban is érződik, aztán a címadó már „Vanirosabban”, népiesebben csap a húrokba. A dal közepén hirtelen van egy akusztikus rész is felbukkan a szóló előtt. Az északiak varázskardjáról szóló Thyrfing egy kitűnő dán nyelvű nóta, vezető dudatémával, melyért a banda csinos népzenészhölgye, Sara felel. Komoly dudajátékkal megy tovább a net single-ként is megjelent harci induló, a By The Hammer They Fall. A zenekar másik erőssége a sokszínű vokál, e dalban például kétféle torz éneket hallhatunk, emellett az új anyagon a gitárszólók is komolyabbak lettek. A Tveskægs Hævn Villásszakállú Svend dán királyról (986-1014), Anglia meghódítójáról és első skandináv királyáról szól. Hangulatilag és zeneileg egyaránt a nagyszerű Svartsot első két lemezének világát idézi. A Brigands of Jomsborgban előtérbe kerül billentyű; kalóz metalra hajazó dallamokkal meséli el az egyik leghírhedtebb viking zsoldos csapat, a jomsvikingek életét. A hetes dal, az Æresdød egy melodikus nóta furulyával és emelkedett kórussal, mely az elesett viking hősök Valhallába jutásáról énekel. A Vinlandsfærd szintén dánul szólal meg, a vikingek közismert amerikai útjáról szól, epikus kórussal a refrénekben és még epikusabb szólóval/átvezetővel. A Warriors of Asgardban ismét a duda játszik fontos szerepet, fejrázós, melodikus tételről van szó, epikus harci kórussal. A Hlidskjalf Gynger a lemez egyik mulatósdala és egyben utolsó dán tétele, akár az első lemezre is felkerülhetett volna. Jópofa a feleselgető refrén, ahogy ismét erősek a szóló riffjei is. A Raise Your Horns egy gyorsabb, rövid s már címéből adódóan is korsó- illetve csanaklengetős nóta. Az utolsó előtti nóta a hosszú, 8 perces Fimbul sámánisztikus bevezetővel, majd sötét légkörrel, mely illik az északi mitológiából vett témához, a világvégéhez. A lemez záróakkordjait a Sons of the North biztosítja, melynek első fele hangulatos akusztikus rész, aztán 2:45-nél metalba vált az egész, viszont a kitűnő, tiszta ének végig megmarad, illetve a végén kibővül egy komoly kórussal is. E dal szövegét és a vezető tiszta éneket is tekintve abszolút egy középkori bárd énekét juttatja eszembe.
A dalok mellett a borítóról is érdemes pár szót váltani, hiszen lenyűgöző lett most is. Az egész lemez hangulata, minősége, stílusa kitűnő, tehetséges zenészek játszanak jól megkomponált tételeket. Lehet, hogy csak hangzatos reklámszövegnek hat a „Dánia folk metal reménysége” jelző, de bizony van benne igazság! A Svartsot után a Vanirra is érdemes odafigyelni, ha a derék hallgató e kis északi ország felé fordítja fülét!

Although the battle horn of the Danish viking/folk metal group sounded first in only 2009, they released their second longplay on September 10th, 2012. The first album, Særimners Kød was released in early spring, 2011 and it covered the rejoicing, merry topics of the Norse mythology in fast, pint-waving style, with Finntroll-like parts and many keyboard themes. In contrast with this, the new material has a more serious atmosphere, the main direction is the heroic/viking metal. Most of the lyrics – now also in English besides Danish – are about the legendary battles of the Scandinavian history and mythology, but of course there are some topics about revelry among the 13 tracks, too.
You can feel this harder style in the metal intro, Dark Clouds Gather, then the title-song starts riffing with a more folkish, “more Vanir” attitude. There’s also an acoustic part in the middle of the song, before the solo. Thyrfing about the magic sword of the Norse is an excellent Danish song with lead bagpipe theme, played by the band’s pretty folk musician, Sara. The next track, which was released earlier as a net single, By The Hammer They Fall also goes on with more bagpipes. Their other strength is the big variety in vocals, for example in this song we can hear two kinds of harsh vocals and also the guitar solos became stronger on the new album. Tveskægs Hævn is about Sweyn Forkbeard, Danish king (986-1014), the conqueror of England and its first Scandinavian king. Both its atmosphere and its music evoke the world of the first two albums of the mighty Svartsot in me. In Brigands of Jomsborg the keyboard plays a lead role; this track tells the life of one of the most infamous Viking groups, Jomsvikings with pirate metal-like melodies. The seventh piece, Æresdød is a melodic song with whistle and elevated choir; they sing about the journey of the dead Viking heroes to Valhalla. Vinlandsfærd is also a track sung in Danish, it’s about the well-known journey of the Norsemen into America. It has epic choirs in the refrains and an even more epic solo/interlude. In Warriors of Asgard the bagpipe plays bigger role again, it’s a melodic track with epic battle choir. Hlidskjalf Gynger is one of the rejoicing songs on the album and its last Danish piece; it would absolutely fit the first album, too. The chatting chorus is good and the solo’s riffs are also strong. Raise Your Horns is a faster, short and – according to its title – a pint and horn-waving track. The song before the last one is the 8-minute-long Fimbul with shamanistic prologue and then with dark atmosphere, which fits its Nordic mythological topic about the apocalypse. The finishing accords of the album are ensured by Sons of the North, which first part is a pleasant acoustic one; then it turns into metal at 2:45, but the excellent clean vocals remain till the end and even a choir joins at the end. The lyrics and the lead clean vocals really remind me of the song of medieval bards.
Besides the songs, the cover artwork also deserves some words, because it’s fascinating again. The atmosphere, quality, style of the whole album is perfect, talented musicians play well-composed tracks. “Denmark’s folk metal hope” seems to be a well-sounding promo motto but it contains a real matter for sure! After Svartsot, you should also check Vanir, if you, estimable listener turn your ears towards this small Nordic country!
