Itt-ott számomra a svéd Pest zenekarra emlékeztető megoldások jutottak eszembe Vetus Obscurum hallgatása során. Disszonáns témái nem járnak be túl nagy skálát, a riffek fagyos dallamvilága a dal vége felé egy lassabb, szólisztikus részbe csapnak át, amely inkább a Krohm zenei világát idézi.

Másodikként a „The Omen From The East” című szerzemény hallható, melynek kezdő témája a Darkthrone sokat vitatott Ravishing Grimness albumának egyes riffjeivel rokon. Ez a dal szuicid témáknak sincs híján, a gyors tempó mellett az elszállósabb, mélyebb témák is teret kapnak. A lemezt folytató „Antidote To Humanity” sem hoz sok újat a korábbiakhoz képest, viszont itt már élesen elkülönül egymástól a két extrém énekhang, amelyek egymás hatását egészen egyedülálló módon egészítik ki; nincs sok lényegi eltérés a két vokál között, azonban nagyon jól beleillenek ebbe a nyers, sötét atmoszférájú zenei masszába.
A Blood Revelations-t a címadó tétel zárja, melyet a háttérbe mosott groteszk zajok vezetnek fel. Nihilist és Dead hangja élesen hasít át a dal szerkezetén, a kíméletlen tempón. A tömény fél órának a záró nótában egy szólisztikus, lassabb részlet vet véget, vészjósló szólisztikus kiállással, a gitárzajok elnémulásával nyugtalanító atmoszférát teremtve.

A felvételek Numinas házi stúdiójában készültek (ColdVoid Studio), ennek ellenére a megszólalás igen erős, persze figyelembe véve a stílus sajátosságait.

Összességében elmondható, hogy a Vetus Obscurum jó irányban halad, valamint magabiztos produkciót nyújtott ezzel a kiadvánnyal.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Vetus Obscurum from Seattle was a short-lived project, which Numinas had formed in 1997 before foundating his band called Krohn. His direction was to create rough, harsh Black Metal, that didn’t fit into the less direct effort of Krohn. While Krohn worked actively over the years, Vetus Obscurum existed only in the background. In 2008 Numinas thought that the time has come to revive his dormant band, notably on the ground of lots of musical ideas, that weren’t fit into Krohn’s soundscape.

This material, titled „Blood” Revelations’ was released in 2009 containing four songs, that are intended to recall the essence of the band. The first song, which was titled after the band’s name, leads us into the destruction without any prelude. Its dynamism delivered by the harsh, rough and rugged sound opens the material. Some parts and elements of this song reminded me of the Swedish Pest. The dissonant themes of the track stay within a small scale, the melodies of the cold riffs towards the end of the track turns it into a slower song, with creating a soundscape that rather recalls Krohn.

The Second track „The Omen From The East” starts with a riff that is similar to some parts of the often criticised Ravishing Grimness album by Darkthrone. This song contains a more suicidal atmosphere and beyond the fast tempos the music is filled with deeper, melancholic issues. We won’t hear any suprises in the next track – „Antidote To Humanity” – but here we can hear the two extreme vocals separately from each other and using the specialities of the two vocals together makes this song complete. There is a little substantive difference between these two vocals though, but they fit very well into this raw, dark musical atmosphere.

The fourth track is the self-titled „Blood Revelations” starts with some noises blurred into the background. Voices of Nihilist and Dead sharply splits the song’s structure, this ruthless tempo. A slower part brings the end of this concentrated half an hour by a slower installment with outfading distorted guitar voices to set a disturbing atmosphere. Blood Revelations does not contain a lot of novelty in Black Metal, but it may be a reliable material for Black Metal fans.
The material, beside Numinas (playing guitars, bass and drums on the album) features two vocalists, named Nihilist (ex-Abazagorath) and Death (Drawn & Quarter). The recordings were made at Numinas’ home studio (Studio ColdVoid), in spite of this, the sound is well-made, of course, with taking into consideration the particularities of Black Metal.

Overall, Vetus Obscurum is on the right path, and did a severe production with this release.
