Két évvel a Memento Mori kiadása után ismét új lemezzel jelentkezett a teátrális koncertjeiről és a halálra épülő koncepciójáról ismert pécsi pszichedelikus folk metalos Virrasztók. Elődjéhez hasonlóan A Halál Színei is előbb a Hammerworld magazin mellékleteként látott napvilágot 2013. december elején, digipack verzióban pedig később, 2014 februárjában érkezik.
A lemez címe igen találó, talán az eddigi legszínesebb anyagát rakta össze a dél-dunántúli brigád. Az új matéria és elődje között eltelt időszakban több változás is történt a zenekarban, így új hangot ismerhettünk meg Angelina személyében és a dobok mögött is új arc bukkant fel. Bár a zenekar fő dalszerzői a „virrasztók” (Scrofa – ének, tekerőlant; Szkrobek – basszus, sampler; Tomusin – gitárok), sok színt visz a csapatba a három „sirató” is. Sajnos azonban úgy tűnik, a siratók köre nem túl szilárd, hisz a decemberi megjelenés táján kilépett Angelina és a hegedűn játszó, egyben háttérvokálos Becse is, így a lemezbemutató koncertek februárra csúsztak át. Mindenesetre az új korongon még ez a felállás hallható és a végeredmény elég ütős lett!
Az egy óra hosszú anyag szokás szerint az elmúlás és gyász témakörét járja körül sok-sok aspektust és nézőpontot felvillantva. A lemezt kicsit furcsa módon a Világvége nyitja, mely a 2012. december 21-én esedékes, végül elmaradt világvégére íródott. Az emberiséget búcsúztató, zongorás nóta azonban csak bevezeti a matériát: további tíz dalban hallhatunk történelmi témájú szövegeket, legendákat, horror sztorikat és filozofikus gondolatokat is a halálról – a legtöbb számot átszövi egy másik gondolatiság is, a szerelem kérdésköre.
A zenében most nagyobb szerepet kaptak az elektronikus effektek, sok helyen kifejezetten indusztriális témákat hallhatunk, például a már száz éve aktuális problémát boncolgató Kivándorlásban, a horrorisztikus Élve eltemetvében vagy az általánosabb témájú A lélekharangban. A gitárok szerepe megváltozott kicsit, a korábbiaknál metálosabb, zúzósabb témák kaptak helyet ezen a lemezen, leginkább a Dobozi Mihály tipikus heavy riffelését érdemes kiemelni. Pár helyen azonban kifejezetten popos, fülbemászó dallamvezetés hallható, némelyik egészen ismerősnek hat. S míg a Memento Morin hiányoltam a tekerőlantot, itt már sűrűbben felcsendül csodaszép recsegős hangja, sőt még citera és darbuka is előkerül a hódoltságkori pécsi legendát feldolgozó, orientális beütésű A félhold árnyékában-ban. A vonóstémák is nagyon jók, néhol kifejezetten zseniálisak (pl. a Világvégében vagy az A halálra táncoltatott faluban), mégis az a legnagyobb gondom A Halál Színeivel, hogy több helyen túl háttérbe szorult a hegedű.
Vokálok terén is színes anyagot hozott össze a banda. Scrofa kihasználja minden hangszínét, narrációtól az énekbeszéden át a karcos heavy metalos vokálokig mindent hallhatunk tőle s Angelina is váltva használ klasszikus népies, dél-alföldi énekstílust, keleties vokalizálást és tiszta, szinte kislányos énekhangot. Sajnos hörgésből kevesebb van, mint az előző lemezen, szinte csak aláfestésként villan fel, cserébe azonban a kifejezetten Nevergreenes hatású A halálon is túlban latin nyelvű, gregorián jellegű kórus és kitűnő gótikus női ének is hallható a pécsi Soulmirror énekeseinek köszönhetően!
Dalszövegek terén úgy érzem, a történelmi és mondabeli témák lemezről lemezre erősebbek (friss kedvenceim A félhold árnyékában, A halálra táncoltatott falu és a Rózsa Sándor), az általánosabb témájú szövegek (A lélekharang, Az idő kereke) véleményem szerint azonban most gyengébbre sikeredtek – kicsit talán kezd kifulladni ez a koncepció.
Zárásként bízom benne, hogy hamar megoldódnak a tagcserével járó problémák és ismét színpadra áll a banda, hogy bemutassa az új dalokat! Egyelőre nem tudok dönteni, ez a lemez vagy az előző sikerült-e jobban, koncerten majd kiderül, mindenesetre A Halál Színei mindenképp az egyik legjobb 2013-as folk metal album!

ENGLISH VERSION:
Two years after releasing Memento Mori, the Hungarian psychedelic folk metal band, Virrasztók (known for their concept about death and the tradition of vigil and also for their theatrical shows) releases a new album. A Halál Színei (“The Colours of Death”) is being released in the same way as its predecessor was: first they released it as a supplement of the Hungarian Hammerworld magazine in early December, 2013 while it’ll be out in digipack version in February, 2014.
The title of the album is very adequate; maybe this is their most colourful material up to date. In the meantime between the last two LPs, there were several changes in the line-up. A new voice appeared with Angelina beyond the microphone and also a new drummer joined the crew. Although the main composers of the band are the “vigilants” (Scrofa – lead vocals, hurdy-gurdy; Szkrobek – bass, sampler; Tomusin – guitars), the three “mourners” add many colours, too. But unfortunately the line-up of mourners (the female vocalist, the fiddler and the drummer) seems to be instable, because Angelina and Becse (violin, additional vocals) left the band around the release date of this album in December. But you can hear this line-up still on the new album and they made an ass-kicking material together!
The album is an hour long and walks round the topics of pass and mourning again showing many aspects and points of view. It’s a bit strange, but the first song is Világvége – “End of the World”; it was written to 21st of December, 2012 because of the hyped but cancelled end of the world. But the piano-lead farewell to mankind is just the prologue: we can hear Hungarian legends, historical lyrics, horror stories and philosophic thoughts about death in ten more tracks – many of them are also interwoven with thoughts about love.
In the music, electronic effects play more important role now making the music more industrial metal-like, e.g. in the horroristic Élve eltemetve (“Buried Alive”), or in Kivándorlás (“Emigration” – an actual problem in Central Europe for around a century now) or in A lélekharang (“The Soul-Bell”). The role of guitars was changed a bit; the new album contains more metalish, heavier tunes – I should mention the typical heavy riffing of Dobozi Mihály (“Mihály Dobozi” – story of a self-devoted hero in the 16th century). But sometimes the main melody is rather pop-like and catchy – some of these melodies even cause déjà vu for me. And while I missed hurdy-gurdy on Memento Mori, now we can hear its beautiful buzzing sound more often and even zither and darbuka appears in the oriental influenced A félhold árnyékában (“In the Shadow of the Crescent”) – a legend from Pécs, the band’s hometown from the Ottoman era. The string melodies are also very great – sometimes they are literally awesome (e.g. in Világvége or in A halálra táncoltatott falu [“The village which was made to dance until they die”]) but my biggest problem with this album that violin is often in the background and almost deafened by the guitars.
The vocals are also very colourful on A Halál Színei. Scrofa uses all of his tones from narration through recitative to harsher heavy metal vocals and Angelina also uses classic Hungarian folk singing style altering with Eastern vocals and clean, almost girly singing. Unfortunately there are fewer growls than on Memento Mori, it appears only as short background sound, but on the other hand we got Latin Gregorian-like choirs and excellent gothic female vocals in A halálon is túl (“Over even the Death”) by the guest vocalists from a local band, Soulmirror (maybe the song was inspired by the Hungarian-Serbian gothic fellow band of Virrasztók, Nevergreen).
The lyrics are in Hungarian as always and I feel that the band is better and better in writing lyrics about historical events or legends (my new favourites are A félhold árnyékában, A halálra táncoltatott falu and Rózsa Sándor – the last one is about the most famous Hungarian highwayman of the 19th century). On the other hand, the lyrics which tell more general thoughts about death (A lélekharang, Az idő kereke [“The Wheel of Time”]) are weaker now: maybe the concept started reaching its limits.
To sum up, I recommend you this very good album if you are opened to psychedelic and folkish metal in an exotic language! I can’t decide yet if A Halál Színei is better than Memento Mori (maybe the upcoming gigs will show) but A Halál Színei is one of the best folk metal albums of 2013 for sure!
