Az Infini a szakmai és rajongói körökben is legendaként ismert és elismert Voivod tizenkettedik és minden valószínűség szerint utolsó stúdióalbuma. Sajnos immár a második, mely a 2005-ben, 45 évesen, tragikus körülmények között elhunyt Denis D’Amour gitáros nélkül, de laptopján rögzített játékát, ötleteit egy az egyben, eredeti formájában felhasználva készült el. Az anyagon most is Jasonic tépi a bőgőt, és részben ő felelt a keverésért is. Az eredendően tompa, koszos és nem túl izmos gitárhangzás a dalok összképét, megszólalását illetően sajnos erősen leszűkíthette a zenekar és a hangmérnökök lehetőségeit is. Gyanítom, hogy Piggy témáinak dalokká, albummá gyúrása nem lehetett könnyű feladat sem technikai, sem érzelmi szempontból…
A régebbi anyagokra épülő, Blacky-vel végignyomott tavalyi fesztiválok és egyéb bulik után, jelenleg Jasonic-kal a soraiban, az utolsó három anyagot megszólaltatva turnézik a csapat (gitáron a kanadai Martyr gitárosával, Dan Mongraine-el kiegészülve). A PeCsa színpadán hamarosan mi is láthatjuk őket a Down társaságában.
Egyszerű, középtempós, kétszavas refrénre építő dal a nyitó God Phones, tempós, Motörhead-es szólóbetéttel. Punkos lendület és fíling, valamint ízes gitárfikcsik elegyére épül a From The Cave, majd kimért tempójú, szaggatott alapriffet hozó dal az Earthache, melynek a szólójára érdemes odafigyelni. Az album egyik legvoivodosabb és legjobb tétele a domináns, gurgulázós basszusjátékon és dob/bassz grúvon alapuló Global Warning. Űrutazós hangulatú szinti vezeti fel a lassú középtempójú, elvont A Room With A V.U.-t, melyben az ének olykor Alice Coopert idézi, kicsit rekedtebb hanggal, finoman horrorisztikus hangulattal, zárása pedig progos, technikás téma. Nagyon koszosan megszólaló gitárra épül a fokozatosan lendületbe jövő Destroy After Reading, melynek a kissé monoton basszus-dob összjáték ad fazont. Pontozós, szaggatott alapokon kattog a Treasure Chase. Tekerős szólója, mely a refrénnel fel-felváltva hangzik el, kicsit belendíti a dalt. A tempósabb nóták egyike a Krap Radio, melynek rock ’n’ roll-os szólója, lassabb középrésze érdemel említést. Grunge-osan enervált monotóniába hajló tétel az In Orbit, jók az énekdallamai és kissé hátborzongató, ahogy Snake azt énekli, hogy „…home sweet home…”. Elég tucatriffere épül, mégis a CD egyik legemlékezetesebb trackje a Deathproof, melyben érdemes odafigyelni Jasonic retro hangzású és hatású játékára, mely kellemesen színesíti az összképet. Mintha oroszlán hörrenne fel, úgy mordul a bőgő a Pyramidome elején, melyben disszonancia és blues váltakozik, a szólója pedig – már ha annak nevezhetjük – picit zakkant. A Morpheus kissé úszós hatású alaptémáját csak a dob pörgeti fel olykor, a beteg, nyígós szóló alatt igen dzsunga riff hallható, végül ájtatos lebegéssel zárul a dal.
Szörcsögő basszus viszi a hátán a már-már szélvészként száguldó Volcano-t, mely akár Motörhead feldolgozás is lehetne egzotikus Voivod ízekkel fűszerezve. A refrénben még magát a Kilmistert is hallani vélem… Tuti koncertfavorit!
Nehéz egy legendáról írni. Főleg, ha az nagyon különleges és nagyon nehéz helyzetben van. Az ember nyilván nem akar bálványt döntögetni. Legalábbis nem szívesen tenné. Se a sajátját, se a másokét. S bár első két hallgatás után kissé le voltam lombozva, nagyon nyitott szívvel, nyitott elmével álltam az Infini-hez, szerettem volna megszeretni… Sajnos ez nem sikerült maradéktalanul és jó Voivod albumhoz méltón túl gyorsan és könnyen sem ment. Eleinte úgy éreztem, hogy nem igazi, zsigeri Voivod anyag az új lemez. A kép persze némiképp javult az első találkozás óta, de kicsit olyan, mintha viszonylag egyszerű, Foo Fighters, QOTSA és Motörhead elemek lennének Voivod esszenciával keverve. Ami önmagában még nem lenne baj, csak az utóbbiból mintha nem jutott volna elég. Vagy nem minden nótába. És ez kicsit szomorú. Bár a dalok nem rosszak, sőt… olykor úgy érzem, hogy közülük néhány sosem került volna lemezre, ha Denist nem szólítja magához az égi gitáros, hisz jöttek volna a frissebb, ütősebb témák és együtt jobban meg is lehetett volna szűrni, vitatni, hangszerelni őket. Mintha Piggy távoztával a Voivod avantgárd, újító szelleme is halványodni látszana. Sajnos…

Infini is the twelfth and most probably last studio album of the legendary and both critically and publically acclaimed band Voivod. Sadly, it is the second one after the tragic passing away of guitarist Denis D’Amour in 2005 at the age of 45. However, he recorded some ideas and complete parts on his laptop, which are being used in their original form on the second album by now. The bass is once again in the hands of Jasonic and he is also partly responsable for the mixing. The original blunt, filthy and not too strong guitar sound unfortunately minimised the options of the band and the studio engineer. I suspect that transforming Piggy’s ideas into complete songs must have been a hard task both technically and emotionally…
After last year’s festivals and tours with Blacky consisting of older material, they are currently on tour with the last three albums with Jasonic on bass and Dan Mongraine from the Canadian band Martyr on guitars. We can soon catch them on the stage of PeCsa, along with Down.
The opening God Phones is a simple, middle-paced song built on a two-words refrain and with a Motörhead-like solo. Punkish dinamism and feeling and nice guitar-decorations provide the basis for From the Cave, followed by a slow, staccato riff and a remarkable solo in Earthache. One of the best and most Voivod-like songs on the album is Global Warning, based on dominant, growling bass play and drum/bass groove. A space travelling synth introduces the slow-tempoed, abstract, slightly horroristic mooded song, A Room with A.V.U., in which the vocals sometimes remind me of Alice Cooper, only a bit scratchier. The closing of the song is a proggy, technical idea. Destroy After Reading builds force gradually, has an incredibly filthy guitar sound and is given character by the somewhat monotonous bass-drum cooperation. Treasure Chase is a ticking song based on staccato sounds. The „conversation” of the refrain and the fast solo gives dinamism to the song. Krap Radio is one of the faster songs with a rock’n’ roll solo and a slow middle part. In Orbit is a grungelike, dull and monotonous track with good vocal melodies and when Snake sings „…home sweet home…” it gives me goosebumps. Even though Deathproof is built on an average riff, it is one of the most remarkable songs on the album. The colouring, retro feeling play of Jasonic deserves attention. The bass growls like a lion at the beginning of Pyramidome, in which dissonance and blues are circling, and the solo – if we may call it one – is a bit out-of-mind. The swimming basic themes of Morpheus are only fastened by the drums sometimes and before the ethereal floating close of the song, under the sick, crying solo there is a riff that mus have been forged in some jungle. The almost lightning-fast Volcano is carried on its back by a muddy bass, this song could even be a Motörhead cover with exotic Voivod flavours. I could even hear Mr. Kilmister in the refrain… This is a definite gig favourite!
It is hard to write about a legend, especially, when it is very special and in a hard situation. The writer obviously does not want to topple any idols. Or at leasr, he’s not willing to do so. Neither his own or others”. And even though I was sad after the first two listenings, I opposed Infini with as open a heart and mind as it was possible, since I wanted to get to love it… Unfortunately, I did not manage to do so completely and – as it is with all good Voivod albums – it wasn”t an easy or fast task. I first felt that the new disc is not a real, instinctive Voivod album. Of course, the picture bettered since the first encounter, but still sometimes it is as if simple Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age or Motörhead elements were mixed with the essence of Voivod. This, in itself, would not be a problem, but many times, there is not enough from the latter. Or just not enough for some of the songs. And this is a little sad. Even though the songs are not bad, sometimes I feel that some of these would have never made it onto a Voivod album, if Denis wasn’t called from the cares of this world. Newer, better ideas would have came and it would have been easier to filter them, argue about them, and put them to the test. It seems that with the passing of Piggy, the avantgarde, renewing spirit of Voivod starts to fade away.
