Az ausztrál ötösfogat (akiket úgy is aposztrofálnak, hogy a legendás A-HA metál inkarnációja) – Alex Canion (basszusgitár, vokál), Chris Hanssen (gitár), Daniel Estrin (ének, szintetizátor), Mark Boeijen (dob), Simone Dow (gitár) – lassan tíz éve, hogy megalakult, ezalatt pedig kiadtak pár anyagot. Az új korong tizenkét tracket tartalmaz, stílusilag a melodic metal fogalomkörébe helyezve. Hát lássuk.
A nyitó Land Of Lies a ’90-es évek közepét és az ezredforduló környékét idézi meg zeneileg, míg az ének a nyolcvanas évek végi, kilencvenes évek eleji new-wave/gothic szintér hatásait mutatja fel keverve némi metal feelingel. Alaptémák lüktetnek finoman, de dinamikusan, a jól kiemelt refrénrész pedig csak erősíti a dal hatását. Érdekesen ötvöződik a szerkezeti felépítés, olyan nosztalgia szaga van a dolognak, de a fiúk jól ötvözik a szimfonikus jegyekkel megáldott témákat. A Common Ground futurikus kezdete is az előbbi megállapítást erősíti, amely inkább egy vegytiszta metal, tele szimfonikus jegyekkel (anno Therion és tsai). A dallamos ének továbbra is jól szól, ahogyan a pontos és tiszta játék is megállja a helyét. Különösebben nem dobta el az agyam ettől a számtól sem, de az már igaz, hogy fülbemászó témák követik egymást, és egy percre sem válik unalmassá. A Lost egy keményebb indítással töri meg a csendet, majd egy finomabb betét hátán az ének is becsatlakozik. A könnyedén váltakozó erőteljes és lazább témák mellett nagyon jó kis elszállós rész is helyet kapott, ami feldobja a hangulatot teljesen. A gitártémák mellett a ritmusszekció is jól kidolgozott, a hangzás megfelelő, így garantált az élvezet:)
A The Devil In Me ismét egy megosztott dal, ahol a határvonalak elmosódnak. Kontrasztos képek váltakoznak a témák vonalán, a szerkezet magabiztos felépítése, a határozott játék dicsérni való. Bizonyára nem kis munka fekszik ebben a korongban, de úgy érzem, mindent megtettek azért, hogy az egész ennyire korrektül szólaljon meg. A Close Your Eyes követi az eddigi vonalat: finom dallamok szólalnak meg a gitáron, a dob és a basszus pontos kísérete nagyon jó, a szintetizátor hangjai is dicséretesek, nem beszélve az énekről, amely itt még változatosabb skálán mozog. Hangulatos, kellemes nóta, minden érintés egyetlen egésszé fonódik össze, a szóló pedig erősít a hangulaton. Kíváló. Ahogyan a Total Existance Failure kavargó képei feltűnnek a semmiből, úgy mélyülök bele egyre jobban a zenébe…ez egy középtempós nóta, változatos színvilággal – nagyon jól átjön amit a zenekar közvetíteni akar: a finom árnyalatok és az erős részek abszolút jól megférnek egymás mellett. Megvallom őszintén: amikor először belehallgattam ebbe a korongba, rosszabbra számítottam, és jól esik csalódni:) A Straight To The Other Side ismét a Therion világát idézi szerkezetében és játékában, de itt sem plágiumról van szó, csak egyszerű hatásokról, amiből mindkét banda ugyanúgy merített. Nincs ezzel semmi baj – gyors dallamok, kemény ütemek, pontos játék, jól megszerkesztett dal, korrekt előadás – és a hatás sem semmi.
Az In My Arms a címéből adódóan is egy érzelmes, enyhén szomorú dal, kellemes vonalvezetéssel, óvatos lépésekkel, némi szürke színnel, suhanó tájjal. Izgalmas darab tudott maradni így is és kifejező – nehéz ebben a stílusban újat, ötleteset alkotni, de úgy érzem, a Voyagernek ez sikerült. Bár ezerszer elkoptatott alapok adják a dal gerincét, mégis új és új, ahányszor csak meghallgatom. A Times Like These visszatér a húzósabb témákhoz, a tempó egyenletes, a változatos variációk jól illeszkednek egymáshoz. Égre tárt karok ezek: nyitott szemek, szédülés, a lélek szabadulni vágyása – a benső lázadása egy-egy cseppbe oltva. A szintetizátor játéka itt is nagyon sokrétű, sok dallamot épp ez a hangszer hoz, de nagyon sok átkötő betét is ehhez köthető. Rég hallottam ebben a műfajban kiemelkedő zenekart, a stílus rajongói nem fognak csalódni! Az On The Run From The World szalad, suhan, repül egyszerre, átkarolva mindent. Az ének változatossága, a keményebb játék a dallamos részekkel ötvözve jól szól, és bár kissé gyengébb ez a dal a többihez képest, mégsem annyira vészes a helyzet. A riffek, verzék itt is jól ülnek, a szóló pedig felrakja a koronát az egészre. Itt is jól felépített szerkezetet hallhatunk, jó megoldásokat, ami korrekt előadással van párosítva.
A Without A Sigh egy alig kevesebb, mint két perces laza kis átkötő dal, könnyed énekkel, elvarázsolt zenei résszel és hangulattal. Érdekes a megfogalmazása a képeknek: hol szikár, hideg árnyak jönnek, hol pedig kiemelkedik az egészből egy villanásnyira a meleg színek tónusa. A címadó záró dal, az I Am The Revolution karcos hanyagsággal teszi rá a pontot az i-re, a sötétebb, már-már eklektikus ének, a kőkemény, határozott játékstílus, a fülbemászó, könnyen megjegyezhető témák ugyanúgy viszik magukkal a hallgatót, mint eddig. Tudatos alkotás ez, jól összeillesztve a megfelelő hangokat, harmóniákat és kíséreteket bármiféle megingás nélkül. Összességében egy jól eltalált lemezt hallhatunk, mindenkinek ajánlom, hogy legalább hallgasson bele – nem veszíthet semmit:)

This Australian five-piece (who can also be named as the metal incarnation of legendary A-HA) – Alex Canion (bass, vox), Chris Hanssen (guitar), Daniel estrin (vox, synth), Mark Boeijen (drums), Simone Dow (guitar) – has been in existence for ten years, and they released some stuffs. The new record includes 12 tracks which can be put in melodic metal category style-wise. Well, let’s see then.
The mood of the opening Land Of Lies musically evokes the mid 90’s and the turn of the millennium while the vocals show influences from the late ’80s/early ’90s new wave/gothic scene with a touch of metal. Basic themes pulse finely but dynamically, and the effect of the track is further enhanced by the emphasized chorus. The structure here is interesting, it smells nostalgia but the guys blends well the symphonic themes. The futuristic opening of Common Ground also strengthens that, and this is rather pure metal with full of symphonic elements (anno Therion and Co.). The melodic vocals sound good too as do the precise and clean play. It’s not that especially mind-blowing but catchy melodies follow each other and it does not get boring at all. Lost breaks the silence with a harder opening, then on a finer inset come the vocals also. There”s a good floating part between the powerful and looser themes alternating easily and it adds something to the mood. Beside the guitar themes, the rhythm section is also well worked-out, the sound is alright so enjoyment is guaranteed:)
The Devil In Me is again a mixed track, where boundaries are blurred. Contrast pictures alternate along the line of themes, the confident structure and the determined performance are noteworthy. Obviously, there’s much work in the record, but I feel that they have done everything to achieve that the record sound this good. Close Your Eyes follows the previous line: the guitar play fine melodies, the precise accompaniment of the bass and drums is excellent, the sounds of the synth are also cool, not to mention the vocals which here moves along a wide range. A moody and pleasant song, every touch is interwoven into one embrace, and the solo strengthens the mood. Excellent. As the swirling pictures of Total Existence Failure appear, I’m getting deeper and deeper into the music… it’s a mid-paced track, with a varied palette of colours, that which the band want to transfer is coming through well, the fine shades and powerful parts are in a good relationship. To be honest: when I first listened to the album, I was expecting worse so it’s good to get disappointed:) Straight To The Other Side again evokes the world of Therion both in the structure and play, but this is not plagiarism either but a simple influence from which both bands have got inspiration. Nothing’s wrong with that, fast melodies, hard beats, precise play, well-composed structure, alright performance, and the effect is also cool.
In My Arms, due to its title, is an emotional, a bit sad song, with pleasant themes, careful steps, with a bit of grey colour, and gliding landscape. It could remain an exciting and expressive song this way – it’s hard to come up with something novel and creative in this genre but I think Voyager have succeeded in it. Though the spine of the track is provided by heard-a-thousand-times-before themes, it sounds new every time I listen to it. Times Like These returns to catchy themes, the tempo is smooth, the varied variations fit each other well. These are open arms to the sky: open eyes, fainting, the wish of the soul to be free – the rebellion of the inner self injected into a drop. The play of the synth here is also colourful, a lot of melodies are provided by it, as are other insets in the song. I haven’t heard such an outstanding band in this genre for a long time, fans of it won’t be disappointed! On The Run From The World is running, gliding at the same time, embracing all. The varied nature of the vocals, the harder play blended with the more melodic parts sound well, and even if this track is a bit weaker than the others, it’s not that bad situation. Riffs and verses are also cool here and the solo puts the crown on the whole. Here we can also hear a good structure, good ideas coupled with cool performance.
Without A Sigh is a shorter than two minutes interlude, with light vocals, enchanted musical parts and mood. The pictures it depicts are interesting: here solid, cold shades come, while there the tone of warm colours stands out. The closing title track puts the crown on the record with its scraping indolence: the darker, almost eclectic vocals, the hard as a rock style, the catchy themes carry the listener as before. It’s a conscious work, solidly blending together proper moods and harmonies. All in all, it’s a good record and is recommended to everyone – there’s nothing to lose:)
