Elmondható, hogy az úgynevezett metalcore irányzat felfutása lassan a vége felé közeleg. Ez persze nem jelenti azt, hogy eltűnne a stílus hisz manapság is hatalmas népszerűségnek örvend. Abban, hogy ez mennyire jogos vagy nem én most nem mennék bele. A lényeg, hogy ez a fajta zene él és virul, manapság is számos banda mozog ebben a közegen. Ennek egyik jeles képviselője az amerikai illetőségű War Of Ages nevezetű zenekar. Nem oly régre nyúlik vissza a banda története, hisz 2005-ben alakult, viszont már négy lemezt is megjelentettek. Eme írás tárgya pedig a legutóbbi korongjuk a bő egy évvel ezelőtt napvilágot látott „Arise and Conquer”.
Mivel nem vagyok a stílus megszállottja, így kicsit kétkedve kezdtem el hallgatni a korongon szereplő tíz dalt. Az elmondható, hogy csalódás nem ért, hisz nagyjából azt kaptam, amit vártam, viszont egészen jól megírt nótákat is hallhatunk a lemez valamivel több, mint fél órájában. A félreértések elkerülése végett a War Of Ages egy fikarcnyit sem tesz hozzá a stílushoz, újító szándékról pedig egyáltalán nem beszélhetünk. Kapjuk a tipikusnak is nevezhető dalszerkezetet. Úgy, mint a döngölős, ugrálós részeket, igazi nulla karakterrel rendelkező üvöltözést Leroy Hamp tolmácsolásában, minimális thrash metal és persze a nagy adagnyi melodikus death metal harmóniákat svéd módra (mint például In Flames). Akadnak azért szólok is, de szerencsére a tiszta éneket nem erőltetik. Ezek mind-mind már nem hatnak újdonságnak, azt viszont értékelnem kell, hogy ezek a fiúk jó nótákat tudnak írni. Ilyen például a kezdő „All Consuming Fire” vagy a „Through The Flames”, vagy a húzós riffet tartalmazó „Wages of Sin”, de idesorolható a „Yet Another Fallen Eve” is. Igazából rossz dal nem hallható a lemezen, de a végére azért kicsit összefolynak az ötletek.
A hangzás teljesen mainak mondható, kristálytiszta és éles. A zenészek jól kezelik a hangszereket, és soha sem mennek át öncélú magamutogatásba. Mindig csak annyit játszanak amennyit kell, és ezt igazán jól is csinálják. Én a magam részéről úgy látom, ha nem is hallunk itt újdonságot, csak egységes színvonalú dalokat, azért ennek ellenére a korong nem sokkal marad el az agyonsztárolt bandák lemezeinek minőségétől. A stílus híveinek pedig erősen ajánlott hallgatnivaló az „Arise and Conquer”.

ENGLISH VERSION:
It can be said that the hype of metalcore genre is approaching its end. Of course, this does not mean that the genre will disappear since it’s still very popular today. Whether this is justified or not, I would not go into. The point is that this kind of music is alive and well, and there are a lot of active bands in the genre. One prominent representative of the said genre is American War of Ages. Their roots go back to not too long ago, since they formed in 2005 but they’ve released four full-lengths until now. This one reviewed here is their latest offering, which was released a year ago under the title Arise and Conquer.
Since I’m not the biggest fan of the genre I started listening to the ten track of the album with some doubt. I can say that I’m not disappointed since I got what I expected but we can hear quite good songs in the half an hour playing time. Just to make it sure, War of Ages does not add anything to the genre and they are no innovators either. We have the typical song structures like hammering, jumping parts, featureless shouting by Leovy Hamp, minimal thrash metal and a good dose of melodic death metal harmonies in the Swedish way (as in In Flames). There are some solos as well but fortunately they do not force melodic vocals. These are nothing new but I must value that they guys can write good songs. so is the opener All Consuming Fire or Through the Flames, or Wages of Sin with a catchy riff, and I can name here Yet Another Fallen Eve. In fact, there are no bad tracks on the record but in the end the ideas sound a bit alike.
The production is modern, crystal clear. The guys know how to handle their instruments and they do not go into musical wanking on their instruments. They only play what should be played and not more. I think that even if we do not hear too novel things here the record isn’t any worse than the stuffs of the overhyped bands around. Highly recommended to fans of the genre.
