A Chain Of Dogs egy holland, limburgi folk thrash metal zenekar erős punk hatásokkal. 2005-ös megszületésük óta több anyagot adtak ki, 2006-ban egy demót, 2008-ban egy EP-t, 2010-ben egy nagylemezt, idén ősszel pedig napvilágot látott Deathworld címre keresztelt újabb EP-jük is. A banda a szokásos metalhangszerek mellett mandolint, hegedűt, furulyákat használ, ezek az új lemezen is egytől egyik megjelennek, kiegészítve harmonikával is, melyet a német Finsterforst muzsikusa szólaltat, aki vokálozik is a korongon további négy vendégénekes társaságában, köztük a Heidevolk két vokalistájával is.
A kislemezt az alig fél perces, harmonikás Intro nyitja, ami át is vezet bennünket a D’r Zjwarte Hond va Krapoel („Krapoel fekete kutyája”) című dalba. Itt a hegedű és a mandolin játssza a főszerepet, illetve a punkos vezető ének, amit több vendégénekes is kiegészít. A cinek és a hegedű hangzása eléggé gyenge, de egyébként fülbemászó refrénű, érdekes tétel. Az Ich Bring d’r Doeëd-ben („Halált hozok”) a punkos vokálok mellett pogány metalos hörgés és Mark és Joris, a Heidevolk két énekesének tenor és basszus hangja is megjelenik (ez különösen a szám legvégén nagyszerű). A dal intrójában és outrójában ugyan a furulya a főszereplő, de nagy részében itt is a mandolin és a hegedű viszik a szólókat. A zárótétel a címadó, angol nyelvű Deathworld a modern világot átkozza (a két holland dalról csak sejtem, hogy népi mondákat dolgoznak fel). Itt is hallható a torz vokál a punkos kiáltások mellett. A hegedű hangzása kifejezetten jó, a mandolin pedig a zenekar erőssége nem csak e rövid anyagon, de a korábbiakon is.
Érdekes műfaji kombinációt alkottak a holland srácok, több figyelmet érdemelnének, remélhetőleg ezzel a lemezzel ismertebbek lesznek. Vannak hibák ugyan az anyagon, főleg a hangzás terén, de ez nem meglepő, hiszen saját kiadású, házi stúdióban rögzített anyagról van szó. (Nekem egyébként a XIX. századi orosz festő műveit tartalmazó booklet sem igazán jön be.)

ENGLISH VERSION:
Chain Of Dogs is a Dutch folk thrash metal band with strong punk influences from Limburg province. They were founded in 2005 and they released a demo in 2006, an EP in 2008, a longplayer in 2010 and this autumn they released another EP entitled Deathworld. The band includes mandolin, violin and whistles besides usual metal instruments. All of these appear on the new CD, too, completed with an accordion, played by the musician from the German band Finsterforst, who also adds some vocals among other four guest vocalists, for example the two singers of Heidevolk.
The minidisc is started with Intro, a very short accordion melody, which is followed by D’r Zjwarte Hond va Krapoel (“Black hound of Krapoel”). Violin and mandolin play the main role in this track and the punk-like lead vocals which are supported by guest vocalists. The sound of the cymbals and the violin is quite weak; on the other hand it’s an interesting piece with catchy chorus. In Ich Bring d’r Doeëd (“I Bring Death”) we can hear pagan metal growls and Mark’s and Joris’ tenor and bass vocals from Heidevolk (they are awesome especially at the end) besides the punkish screams. In the song’s intro and outro whistle plays the main tune, but during the most of the track, again mandolin and violin lead. The last track is the title-song, the English Deathworld. The lyrics are against the modern world (about the two Dutch tracks I only guess they cover folk tales). There are also harsh vocals with the punkish ones again. The sound of violin is really good here, and mandolin tunes are the strength of the band, not only on this short material, but on the previous ones, too.
These Dutch guys made an interesting genre combination, they deserve more attention; hopefully this EP will bring them fame. Also there are some weak points on the disc, especially in sound but it’s absolutely not surprising, because it’s a self-released material recorded in a home-studio. (By the way the booklet with the paintings of a Russian painter from the 19th century isn’t my taste of art.)
