Üdvözlöm a csapatot. Régóta rajongója vagyok a Darkseednek. Még a ’97-es „Spellcraft” idején ismertem meg a zenéteket. Szerintem, mindig is jellemző volt rátok egy sajátos íz világ, ami már akkor is jelen volt. Mennyire tartjátok a zenéteket egyéninek és másolatnak?
Helló, Harry vagyok, a Darkseed új énekese. Először is, köszönet szeretnék mindenkinek, aki kitartott az évek során a Darkseed mellett. Sok ember elveszti az érdeklődését egy idő után, vagy elkezdi az új divatot követni. A bandát illetően, mi nem gondolkozunk azon, milyen divatot vagy stílust kövessünk. Persze, mikor mi kezdtük ez még teljesen másképp működött. A példaképeinket próbáltuk másolni, mint a Paradise Lost és más goth bandákat és nagyon boldogak voltunk, mikor a magazinok hozzájuk hasonlítottak minket. Aztán kezdett saját stílusunk kialakulni, ami új volt és friss. A billentyűssel az eredetiség egy új rétegét mutattuk be a ’90-es években. Nem ragaszkodunk egyébként, hogy mi legyünk a világ legeredetibb bandája, csak jól szóljon, amit csinálunk.
Két új tag is található a zenekarban! Kérlek, beszélj róluk és a régebbi tagokról is, hogy még mennyire élnek halnak a zenéért!
A régi énekest és vezetőt, Stefant váltottam fel, aki személyes okok miatt úgy döntött, kilép a bandából. Voltam már a Darkseedben a kezdetekben (1992-96), de akkor még doboltam és egy kicsit énekeltem. A Darkseed kemény magja (Tommy, Tom, Armin és Mauri) már együtt van jó ideje, ők alkotják a Darkseed szívét, lelkét és ők felelnek a Darkseed védjegyévé vált hangzásáért. Az új basszerosunk az Eisbrecherben játszott, egy ismert német metal/industrial bandában, aki most a mi bandánkat erősíti.
A felvételeket a saját stúdiótokban vettétek fel Tommy Herrmann producerrel. Mit mondanál az új stúdiótokról és az eltöltött időkről a lemezkészítéssel kapcsolatban?
Az új stúdió nem annyira új, az előző albumunkat már itt vettük fel. Manapság jó, ha van egy saját stúdiód, mert így játszogathatsz a hangokkal és ötletekkel, nem kell semmit elsietni. A bandák gyakran változtatnának sok ötleten, de nincs rá lehetőségük, mivel a stúdióidő limitált és elég drága is, az erre szánt pénzösszeg pedig nagyon kicsi. Tommy nagyszerű munkát végez a gyártással, keveréssel és a mastereléssel. Sok más, ismert bandának is készített már albumot, mint például az Equilibrium.
Öt év telt el a korábbi lemez és a mostani között. Milyen problémák adódtak, hogy ennyire eltüntetek? Mennyire vagytok újra lázban a friss lemez kapcsán?
Igazából nincsen semmi komoly gondunk. Stefan elhagyta a bandát, de a többiek stabil részét képezik a bandának. Aktívak maradtak és más érdekes projektben is részt vállalnak (pl. számítógépes játékok zenéinek elkészítésében /Going Downtown/, metál projektekben /Spi-Ritual/. 2008-ban került sor az újjáalakulás miatt szervezett bulira, Münchenben, utána pedig elkezdtünk dolgozni az új albumon. De igazad van: 5 év hosszú idő, viszont a Poison Awaits-t követő albumra már nem kell ennyit várni, ezt megígérhetem. Az anyag még elég friss, de már gondolkozunk a következő albumon.
Az album kezdő dala a „Roads” elég erős elektronikus effektekkel indít, és igencsak slágeres. Célotok volt ennél a számnál, hogy minél emészthetőbb és rádióbarát megközelítésű legyen? Fogtok erre klipet készíteni?
Nem tervezzük meg a számokat, nem gondolkodunk ilyeneken, hogy most a következő cd progresszívebb legyen, vagy inkább rádió barát, az lesz belőle, amit érzünk, végeredménytől függetlenül. Ezúttal a számok kicsit rövidebbre sikeredtek, lényegre törőbbek, de legközelebb talán sokkal progresszívabbak lesznek. A Darkseednek sosem volt szigorúan vett stílusa. Tervezünk egy videót készíteni, talán az Incinerate vágott verziójához, de még nem tudjuk biztosan.
Az idő múlásával és a lemezek megjelenésével párhuzamosan én úgy látom egyre inkább emészthetőbbek a számok, és kevesebb melankólia járja át a dalokat. Milyen változásokat mondanál az 5 évvel ezelőtt megjelent lemezhez képest? Mi a legfőbb vonzereje szerinted a mostani kiadványnak?
A legnagyobb változás valószínűleg az, hogy én lettem az új énekes. Hasonló hangom van, de nem másolom Stefan hangját, megvan a saját stílusom. Ő Hetfieldhez hasonlóan többet sikít, és többet hörög. Én inkább a kifejező tiszta éneket szeretem, és az általánosságban vett éneklést.
Talán igazad van, a számok most sokkal pozitívabbak, kevésbé sötétek és melankolikusak, de a védjegyek többsége ott van. Említésre méltó még, hogy jelenleg több dalszerzőnk is van a bandában, Armin és Tom is nagyban hozzájárultak az albumhoz, például az Incinerate címadó dalát Armin, a billentyűsünk írta. Az anyag többi részét Tommy írta, aki Darkseedet lélegzik minden nap és tudja, mi működhet és mi nem. Én az album sokszínűségének örülök a legjobban, és annak, hogy a rajongók kiderült, a POISON AWAITS jó irányba halad.
A Massacre Records digipackos verzióban is megjelentette a lemezt, amelyen 2 bónusz dal is helyet kap. Melyek ezek, és milyen értékel bírnak a dalok?
A számok: The demon within egy nagyszerű új szám, de nem került fel az albumra és a Comptine d’un autre, ami a „The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain” c. film betétdala. A gitárosunk, Tom mutatta meg nekünk a demó verziót és tetszett a szám hangulata.
Mely bandával karöltve várhatók koncertek és mennyire lesz ez nagyszabású?
Tervezünk most néhány bulit, az első Kijevben lesz, október 23-án. Nagyon szeretünk Németország határain kívül játszani. Nem igazán érdekel a klub mérete, amíg jó a szervezés és vannak rajongók, akik ismerik az anyagot. Nem indulunk turnéra, de sok Darkseed bulira lehet számítani.
Elég sok idő eltelt már megalakulásotok óta. Eddig melyik szakaszát értékeled a legsikeresebbnek? Szerinted most azt túlszárnyaljátok?
Sokkal könnyebb volt a ’90-es években albumot vagy demó kazettát eladni. Emlékszem, a Darkseed indulásakor több száz demo kazettát adtunk el a München utcáin tartott bulikon. Ez manapság lehetetlen volna. A banda történelmének tartóoszlopai közé sorolhatnám a Nuclear Blasttal kötött szerződést és a ’90-es években, a Lacrimosaval történt turné. Akkoriban nem voltam a bandában, de emlékszem, mikor kinyitottam a német Metal Hammert és megláttam egy hatalmas Darkseed interjút. Akkor azt mondtam magamban, megcsinálták a srácok.
Elégedettek vagyunk az új albummal és megpróbálunk annyit turnézni, amennyit lehet. Az eladások tekintetében, manapság nem lehet sok jóra számítani. Csak bízhatunk abban, hogy az emberek szeretnek még igazi albumot a kezükben fogni, olvasni a dalszöveget és osztozni a banda világán és művészetén.

Greetings to the band. I’ve been a big fan of your music for a long time. I got to know you in ’97’s „Spellcraft”. I have always found your music to have a unique flavor that was present at that time, too. How original or somewhat copied do you think your music is?
Hi, I am Harry, the new singer of Darkseed. First of all, let me thank you for sticking with Darkseed for such a long time. Many people lose interest in bands after a while or just go with the latest trends. As far as our band goes we do not really think about following trends or styles. When we started the band this was different, of course. We tried to copy our role models like Paradise Lost and other Gothic bands and were pretty proud if magazines compared us to those bands. But very soon we developed our own style which proved to be rather new and refreshing. By adding keyboards and samples we added another layer of originality in the 90ies. But we do not really care about being the most original band in the world as long as the songs are good.
There are two new members in the band! Please tell us something about them and the older members, how much do they still live for music!
I substitute Stefan, the old singer and mastermind of Darkseed who decided to quit the band because of personal reasons. I used to be in Darkseed in the beginning (1992-96) but I played drums back then and sang some of the clean vocals. The core members of Darkseed (Tommy, Tom, Armin and Mauri) have stayed together for quite a while now and can be called the heart and soul of the band who are responsible for the band’s trademark sound. Our new bassist used to be in Eisbrecher, a well-known German metal/industrial band and completes our new line-up.
You have recorded the songs in your own studio with producer Tommy Herrmann. What would you tell us about your new studio and the time spent with recording?
The new studio isn’t really new, we already recorded our last albums there.
It’s good to have your own studio nowadays to be able to play around with sounds and ideas and take your time. Bands are pretty often frustrated with the result of an album and want to change a lot but it’s not possible as the studio time is limited and expensive and budgets are quite small as you can imagine. Tommy does a great job producing, mixing and mastering the albums. He has also produced other well-known metal bands such as Equilibrium.
Five years have passed since the previous and the latest album. What problems did you have to have disappeared for so long? How excited are you about the fresh material?
We didn’t have any real problems. Stefan had left the band but the rest of the band never really split up. All the band members stayed active and were involved in several interesting projects (e.g. soundtracks for computer games such as GOING DOWNTOWN, metal projects such as SPI-RITUAL). In 2008 we did our reunion gig in Munich and afterwards started collecting ideas for our new album. But you are right: 5 years are a long time and the follow-up for POISON AWAITS will not take so long, take my word for it. As the material is still fresh, we are pretty excited about it, but we already think of the next release.
The starting song of the album, „Roads” starts with pretty strong electronic effects, and it’s somewhat mainstream. Did you want it to be more easily digestible and radio-friendly? Will you make a video clip for it?
We don’t sit at home, going: this next cd has to be progressive or more radio-friendly, we do not PLAN the songs, we FEEL them, whatever the result may be. This time the songs turned out a bit shorter, more to the point, next time they might be way more progressive. Darkseed has never been a band with a restricted style. We are currently talking about doing a video for one of the songs, it might be an edited version of INCINERATE, but nothing is settled yet.
As time passes and your albums are coming out, I feel your music is becoming more and more digestible, with less melancholy in them. What changes would you highlight in comparison with the last album 5 years ago? What do you think to be the most appealing aspect of your new record?
Me being the new singer is obviously the biggest change – I have a similar voice but do not copy Stefan’s way of singing completely, I have my own style, he used to scream more like Hetfield and he used more growls, I am more into expressive clean vocals and „actual singing”.
And you might be right – the songs are a bit more positive and less dark or melancholic, but the rest of the trademarks are still there. It’s also worth mentioning that we have more songwriters in the band right now – Armin and Tom also contributed some really good material, INCINERATE for example is sort of the key track of the album and was written by our keyboarder Armin. The rest of the material was written by Tommy who lives and breathes Darkseed and knows what works and what doesn’t. The most appealing aspect for me would therefore be its diversity and the fans` reactions to POISON AWAITS have shown us that we are on the right way.
Massacre Records has published the album in digipack version, with two bonus tracks on it. Which songs are these, and what importance do they hold?
The tracks are: „The demon within`, which is a great new track that didn’t make it onto the album and „Comptine d’un autre”, which is a cover of the movie theme of „The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain”. Our guitarist Tom played the demo version he had made to us and we liked the atmosphere of the track so we really wanted it to be on the album.
With which bands do you plan to tour and give shows, and how grand-scale will these performances be?
We are planning some gigs right now, the first one will be in Kiev on October 23. We are especially excited about playing gigs outside of Germany. We do not really care about the size of the clubs, as long as the organisation is good and there are some fans who know the material and dig our sound we are happy. We won’t be playing a real tour but you can definitely expect more Darkseed gigs than in the past.
Pretty much time has passed since you were formed. Up to this point, which period do you think to be the most successful in the band’s life? Do you think you will top it with your latest material?
It was a lot easier in the 90ies to sell albums or demo tapes. I remember the beginnings of Darkseed where we sold hundreds of our first demo tapes at our gigs or on the streets of Munich which would be completely impossible today. Some of the pillars of the band’s history are of course the deal with Nuclear Blast Records and the European tour with Lacrimosa in the 90ies. I wasn’t in the band then, but I remember opening the German Metal Hammer and seeing a big Darkseed interview which was two pages long, so I was like: „Now those guys have made it!”
We are really happy with our new release and we will try to tour as much as possible. As far as sales are concerned you cannot expect much nowadays. I can only hope that people in the metal scene still appreciate holding a real album in their hands, reading the lyrics, diving into the world of the band and their art.
