Biztosan lesznek a black metal hívők közül olyanok, akik önkéntelenül, pusztán a név alapján rákattintanak erre a kritikára, nekik mondom, hogy ez a lemez nem az USBM szcéna brigádjának legújabb anyaga, hanem a Bestiary és a Summer Dyingból érkezett tagokból verbuvált bandának második nagylemeze, amely stílusban legalább olyan messze áll a dallasi bandától, mint amekkora a földrajzi távolság a két csapat székhelye között. A lansingi banda tehát a két, már feloszlott helyi bandának az utódjaként tekinthető (ha a Summer Dying tagok által életre keltett, de tiszavirág életű Churchill Downst nem vesszük ide), és valóban, a zene magán viseli a két banda jellegzetes jegyeit: kemény, de melodikus, mint a Bestiary volt, és érezhető rajtuk a rengeteg göteborgi metal hatás is, mint ahogy a Summer Dyingnál is anno. Természetesen több hatás kereszteződésénél önkéntelenül is újabbak és újabbak áramolhatnak a zenébe, és a Dagon esetében sem történt ez másként, és ennek eredménye lett a Terraphobic.
Bevallom, az ezelőtti anyagaikhoz nem volt szerencsém, így majdnem teljesen szűz füllel álltam neki a meghallgatásnak. Azért csak majdnem, mert a tagok előélete alapján volt egy előzetes képem, de ezt nem tudtam összeegyeztetni a sárkányos-viharos booklettel, amit színvilágával inkább egy power csapat albumán tudnék elképzelni. Elolvasva a szövegeket ráadásul egyre inkább egy epikus sárkányölő heavy/power formáció képe kezdett kialakulni bennem, amit nem igazán tudtam hová tenni. Ám egy hallgatás után valahogy mégis az az érzésem támadt, hogy ehhez a zenéhez az egész image passzol, még ha nem is teljesen kiforrott. Amit hallunk az egyrészről a fent felvázolt göteborgi hatású melodic death/thrash, abból is a régi Dark Tranquillityhez hasonló, de nem ritka olyan nem göteborgi melodikus death bandák hatása is, mint például az Amon Amarth (a To the Drums We Rise című szám szerkezete például nagyon hasonlít a viking mesterek számaiéhoz). Ezen kívül sokszor hasonlít a zene egy billentyű nélküli Northerhez, a koncepció miatt pedig néha beugorhat az Exmortus vagy a régi Amoral neve.
Mint látható, ebben a stíluskavalkádban nehéz meghatározni, hogy mi is a valódi irány, amit a zenekar képvisel. Nos, én úgy érzem, egyelőre csak az egyedi hang kialakításán fáradoznak, ugyanis az egyik szám inkább ebből a műfajból merít, egy másik amabból, és van, amelyik jól sül el, van amelyik kevéssé. Például az első három szám bármelyikét bátran ajánlanám mindenkinek, a Full Speed Aheadnek a fogós refrénje egyből megragad az ember agyában, az Into the North pedig a power/heavy és death metal keverékét kedvelőknek okozhat kellemes perceket, csakúgy, mint az Ocean Metal című szerzemény, amelyben a heavy-s énekével már-már King Diamond-i magasságokig felmegy a vokálos. Persze a death hívőknek nem kell megijedni, valószínűleg nem véletlenül ezt a számot hagyták a végére, de ez az egyetlen szám, amelyben van tiszta ének. (Nekem ez személyes kedvenc lett, ezt a vegyes műfajú irányt, ahol visszaköszön a jó öreg 80-as/90-es évek zenéje is, amúgy is szeretem.) Sajnos azonban akadnak kevéssé sikerült dalok is. A „Wave of Predation” a leggyorsabb tétel a lemezen, egy vérbeli göteborgi death/thrash nóta, de sajnos ennyi, a dal maga semmivel sem különb, mint bármelyik hasonló stílusú zenekaré. A „The Last”-ról sem tudok jobbakat elmondani, kellemes dallamok, de semmi extra. A már említett „To the Drums We Rise” is olyan, mint egy B-oldalas Amon Amarth dal. Az is igaz, hogy 11 tétel szerepel a lemezen, így természetes, hogy nehéz azt megoldani, hogy ennyi egyforma színvonalú dal legyen egy helyen.
A lényeg úgyis az összkép, az pedig tetszetős. Igazából van rajta sok fogós téma, amik kikényszerítik belőlem, hogy újra és újra meghallgassam az egész lemezt, mivel az egy-két gyengébb pillanat ellenére tetszik a sok stílus fúziója, és az az irány, amit a csapat kijelölt magának. A hangzás ugyan szintén gyenge pont (a gitárhang például elég vékonyka, de a basszusgitár legalább szépen szól), de minden szépen kihallatszik, úgyhogy ez nem nagy probléma. A csapat az utat már megtalálta, de még le-letér róla, ha ezt sikerül leküzdeniük, és megtalálják, hogy mi kell ahhoz, hogy minden stílus bevonásánál egyforma színvonalú számokat tudjanak írni, akkor közel a cél. Egy egységesebb albummal nagyobbat is robbanthatnak, mert megvan rá minden képességük, ezt a Terraphobic is bizonyítja.

For those black metallers, who read this review just because of the name, I should tell that this Dagon is not the USBM act, this is a group founded by members of Bestiary and Summer Dying. Their music is as far from the black metal band as Lansing from Dallas (the base cities of the two bands). This one could be mentioned as the fusioned reincarnation of Bestiary and Summer Dying as it’s brutal but melodic like Bestiary and has gothenburg influences like Summer Dying had. It’s quite obvious that crossing different genres leads to involve other various musical styles, and I can’t say that what we got here is different. What we got here as a result of these mixing processes is ‘Terraphobic’, the second full-length of a promising band.
I have to make a confession first, I’ve never heard of this band, only the members’ former groups. And according to those bands I was quite surprised by this power metal-like booklet with the dragon, the storm and its colour. But after a listen it just started to make sense. It absolutely fits into the image built up by the atmosphere of this songs, even though their music contains some weaker moments. What we hear is a melodic death/thrash metal with gothenburg influence, a bit similar to the early Dark Tranquillity, but we also can hear other melodic death influences, for instance, the structure and the riffs of the song ‘To the Drums We Rise’ is similar to the work of the great viking melodeath masters Amon Amarth. Besides, Norther’s name came up at some moments (without synth, of course) and because of the conception and the style, Exmortus and the old Amoral should be mentioned too.
In this cavalcade of the musical styles it’s quite hard to put this group into one genre or another. And they shouldn’t be categorized, at least not for now, in my opinion they are still in search for their own sound. As I see, they’ve almost revealed their uniquity but in different musical styles they have different songwriting ability. On the one hand, I would recommend the first three songs, they are simply great. The chorus of ‘Full Speed’ Ahead is really catchy and well-written, and if I were a power/heavy/death mixture-lover, ‘Into the North’ would be my favourite from this album. But I am not, and my favourite is still Ocean Metal with the heavy/glam vocals and the 80s/90s feeling. That song is just simply great! But on the other hand there are mediocre and boring songs. The ‘Wave of Predation’ is the fastest track on this record, it’s a pure gothenburg thrash/death song but that’s all. Mediocre riffs that I heard about a thousand times. A well-performed song though. The track ‘The Last’ is also not their best moment, okay, there are some soft melodies in it but nothing extraordinary. And I mentioned earlier the ‘To the Drums We Rise’, I think it just came off from an Amon Amarth B-sides compilation. But it’s okay, there are 11 tracks on this record so it was quite expected that some of the songs would be weaker, even if they try their best.
And all in all, the most important thing is still the overall image and that is great. It has many catchy moments indeed, and I’ll certainly listen to it again and again because despite the weaker songs, I like what they did here. I like the fusion of the musical styles and the path that the band follows. I don’t like the sound though (the guitars are a bit quiet and weak, however, the bass is well-mixed), but it isn’t disturbing, every single note can be heard. They should keep walking on this road and keep searching to find out which musical styles should be involved and which are not. Dagon is a promising band, and with a more consistent album they could be a top metal band, ‘Terraphobic’ showed us that they have the talent and the potential.
