Kanyarodjunk vissza egy kicsit a tavalyi évhez. Milyen fogadtatásban részesült a bemutatkozó Charred Walls Of The Damned anyag? Ti magatok milyen visszhangra számítottatok?
A fogadtatás csodálatos volt! Minden kritika nagyszerű és úgy tűnik, mindenki imádja az albumot, aminek borzasztóan örülünk!
A zenekar akár all star projectként is felfogható, de véleményetek szerint az ismert nevek csatasorba állítása garanciát jelent a sikerre?
Nem hinném, hogy ez garancia lenne a sikerre, a nevek nem számítanak. Az a lényeg, hogy a számok jók legyenek. Szeretném, ha az emberek a számok miatt szeretnék az albumot, nem pedig a tagok miatt.
A kultikus Powermad Plastic Town dalának feldolgozása miért csak bónusz volt? Kinek az ötlete volt, hogy ezt a dalt dolgozzátok fel?
Valójában Powermad Nice Dreams c. száma volt az, és csak egy bónusz volt az első albumra, mert imádom azt a számot és nagy hatással volt rám gyerekkoromban. Ezen az albumon nincs bónusz szám, mivel így is majdnem egy órányi zene van rajta, ami sokkal több, mint az előző albumon!
Élőben is bemutattátok a lemezt? Mennyit koncerteztetek egyáltalán?
Igen, eljátszottuk az első albumot 2010-ben az amerikai és kanadai turnékon, és a visszajelzések fantasztikusak voltak, már alig várom, hogy ismét élőben játszhassunk! Az új számokat a 2012-es turnén hallhatjátok élőben!
Idén jött ki az új alkotás a Cold Winds On Timeless Days, ezúttal több időtök maradt a számok kidolgozására? Mikor álltatok neki a dalok megkomponálásának?
Igen, most több időnk volt az albumra. A számokat már az első album keverése alatt elkezdtem írni, mert annyira izgatott voltam, hogy milyen lesz az album, hogy tele voltam ötletekkel és azonnal neki akartam állni az új számoknak!
Mivel minden tagnak rengeteg elfoglaltsága, más projektje van, hogyan tudjátok időtöket összeegyeztetni, ami a kreatív munkát illeti? Szoktatok-e próbálni?
Nem egyszerű összejönnünk, mivel az államok különböző területein lakunk, de általában Floridában találkozunk, mikor már közel járunk a stúdiózáshoz. Bemegyünk a stúdióba és próbálunk, majd felvesszük a részeket. A bandában mindenki profi és a felvételek előtt rendesen összepróbáljuk a számokat, szóval nem aggódok, hogy esetleg nem lesz valamelyikünk kész, mire a felvételekre kerül a sor.
Van-e fő dalszerző vagy csapatmunka eredményeként születnek meg a dalok?
Igen, én vagyok a fő dalszerző. Én írom és veszem fel az összes számot először, majd a stúdióban mindenki beleszólhat és hozzáadhatja a saját ötleteit. A dalszövegeket is én írom.
Úgy gondolom, hogy az első lemezhez képest egy sűrűbb, komplexebb anyagot készítettetek, amely sok hallgatást igényel, nem adja meg magát olyan könnyen, erről mi a véleményetek?
Köszönöm a kedves szavakat! Igen, remélem, az emberek sokszor fogják meghallgatni az albumot és egyre jobban fog nekik tetszeni. A kedvenc albumaim túlnőttek rajtam és egyre jobban és jobban szerettem őket, remélem a rajongók majd így tekintenek erre az albumra is.
Miért éppen a Zerospant tettétek közzé először?
Szerintem ez a szám képviseli a legjobban a bandát. Súlyos, dallamos, összetett és fülbemászó. Nagyszerűen mutatja be a zenénket.
Ezúttal a gyorsabb, brutálisabb, már-már death metalba hajló témák is megnövekedtek, mint a Zerospanben vagy az Avoid The Lightban, gondolom Steve és Richard zenei múltja miatt, igaz?
Igen, valószínű a saját hatásaim és Steve Deathes tapasztalatai miatt van így. Én is játszottam death metal bandákban, a Burning Insideban és a Incanctationben és nagyon szeretem a Death Metal-t és az ezekből származó hatások mindenképp beleférnek a számainkba.
Azt is megfigyeltem, hogy Ripper ezúttal Dio-ra emlékeztető dallamokat, témákat is hoz…
Igen, Tim hatalmas Dio rajongó és én is az vagyok, úgyhogy neki is nagy hatása van a bandára. Tim egyébként közeli ismerőse volt Dionak, és rettentő szomorú, hogy elment. Egyszer találkoztam Dio-val New Yorkban, kiváló fickó volt.
Ti magatok hogyan jellemeznétek az anyagot és hogyan ajánlanátok a rajongók figyelmébe?
Szeretem azt mondani, hogy ez egy Heavy Metal album, ennyire egyszerű, mivel megtalálható benne elemek a metál minden típusából, mint a Death Metal, Power Metal, Black Metal, és Progressive Metal, úgyhogy szerintem minden metál rajongó találhat benne érdekességet.
Jövőbeni terveitekről mit kell tudnunk? Számíthatunk európai esetleg magyar koncertekre?
Igen, nagyon remélem, hogy 2012-ben lesz lehetőségünk Magyarországon játszani! Tervezzük a jövő évi turnét, remélhetőleg hamarosan felkerülnek a dátumok a következő címekre: www.richardchristy.com és www.metalblade.com/cwotd. Láttam egy YouTube felvételt, amin egy magyar banda a Ghost Town c. számunkat játssza és nagyszerű munkát végeztek! Remélem, találkozunk 2012-ben!

Let’s start with last year. What was the reception of your debuting album Charred Walls Of The Damned? What feedback had you expect?
The reception has been amazing! All the reviews so far have been great and everyone seems to love the album which makes me really happy!!!
The band is an All Star project, do you think the line up with well known names guarantees success?
No I don’t think it guarantees success because to me the names don’t really matter, what really matters is that the songs are good. I want people to listen to this album and like it because of the good songs, not for who is in the band.
Why did you put the cultic Powermad Plastic Down song only as a bonus?
Actually it was the Powermad song Nice Dreams, and that was a bonus for the first album, I love that song and it was a big influence on me when I was a kid, that’s why we put that song on the album. For this album there are no bonus songs cause we already have almost an hour of music which is a lot more than the last album!
Have you played the album live yet? How many live show do you do?
Yes we played the first album live in 2010 on a US and Canada tour, the reception was amazing and it was so exciting to play our songs live for the first time! I can’t wait to play our new songs on tour in 2012!
Cold Winds On Timeless Days was released this year. Did you have more time to work on the album this time? When did you start composing the songs?
Yes i did have more time for this album, I started writing the songs while we were mixing the first album because I was so excited with how well the first album turned out, I was very inspired and wanted to start working on new music right away!
Since the members are quite busy and have other projects as well, how do you get together? Do you rehearse?
It is hard for us to get together because we all live in different parts of the US, but when it gets close to the recording time we all meet up in Florida at the studio to rehearse and record our parts. Everyone in this band is very professional and is always well rehearsed when we get in the studio to record, so there’s never any worries about if we’re going to be ready in the studio.
Is there a main songwriter, a mastermind behind the songs or is it teamwork?
Yes I’m the main songwriter, I write and record all of the songs first and then when we get into the studio everyone has a say in the songs and puts in their ideas, but at first I’m the main songwriter and I also write all the lyrics.
In my opinion this album is more dense and complex compared to the first album, which needs a lot of re-listening, it doesn’t give in so easily. What’s your opinion about it?
Thanks for the nice words about it! Yes I hope that people give the album many listens and it grows on them. Some of my favorite albums are albums that grew on me and I liked them even better the more I listened to them, and I hope that fans see this album the same way.
Why did you publish Zerospan in the first place?
I think that song represents everything that this band is about, heaviness, melody, complexity, and catchiness. I think it’s a great representation for this band and our music.
There are more of faster, brutal, almost death metal themes like in Zerospan or Avoid The Light. Is it because of the musical background of Steve and Richard?
Yes I think it is because of the influences that I have and also that Steve has from playing in Death, and I’ve also played in death metal bands like Burning Inside and Incanctation and i really love Death Metal music so alot of the influences from that kind of music definitely fits into my songwriting.
As far as I learned there are melodies and themes reminds me of Dio in Ripper…
Yes Tim is a huge fan of Dio and I’m also a huge Dio fan so he’s definitely an influence on this band. Tim was also close friends with Dio and it’s so sad that he is gone. I met Dio once in New York City and he was one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.
How would you characterize the album, what could you tell about it to the fans?
I like to just say that it’s a Heavy Metal album, as simple as that, because it has elements of every type of metal in it, like Death Metal, Power Metal, Black Metal, and Progressive Metal, so I think there’s something for every type of metal fan in our music.
Any future plans? Can we expect a Hungarian concert?
Yes i really hope there will be a Hungarian concert in 2012! We’re planning a tour right now for next year and hopefully I will have some tour date announcements very soon at www.richardchristy.com and www.metalblade.com/cwotd I saw a video on Youtube.com of a Hungarian band playing our song Ghost Town and they did a really great job! I really hope to see the fans in Hungary in 2012!
